JOB SUMMARY: The Cultural Advisor reports to and works under supervision of the Crisis Hub manager.
The Cultural Advisor acts as a primary resource to the Crisis Hub staff in its development and enhancement of the provision of services that correspond with Ogwanohgwatrae:’ Tseh Niyogwai:ho`de` (Our Hodinohshoni Beliefs). The Cultural Advisor thereby supports consistent, culturally safe service delivery and crisis response. The Cultural Advisor ensures the appropriate development of cultural resources and delivery of cultural programming to facilitate preservation and promotion of traditional Hodinohshoni practices, thereby enhancing a positive and strong cultural identity among clients and staff.
Contract (Up to March 31, 2028)
37.5 hours (12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-Secondary degree or diploma in Indigenous studies and five (5) years’ experience working in cultural preservation OR a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience working in cultural preservation
- Must have working knowledge of Cayuga and/or Mohawk languages and possess an ability to communicate with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
- Experience in supporting those in crisis situations
- Knowledge of the unique social dynamics of the Six Nations of the Grand River
- Hodinohshoni ancestry with understanding, practice and sharing of Hodinohshoni history, culture, traditions, ceremonies, principles and values
- Demonstrated commitment to the culture and community by providing services in ways that respect Hodinohshoni culture and practices
- Knowledge of Hodinohshoni concepts of health and wellness
- Possess a valid Driver’s License

POSITION TITLE: Cultural Advisor for Gędęǫ’ Crisis Response Team
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the supervision of the Crisis Hub manager.
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Cultural Advisor acts as a primary resource to the Crisis Hub staff in its development and enhancement of the provision of services that correspond with Ogwanohgwatrae:’ Tseh Niyogwai:ho`de` (Our Hodinohshoni Beliefs). The Cultural Advisor thereby supports consistent, culturally safe service delivery and crisis response. The Cultural Advisor ensures the appropriate development of cultural resources and delivery of cultural programming to facilitate preservation and promotion of traditional Hodinohshoni practices, thereby enhancing a positive and strong cultural identity among clients and staff.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Functions:
- Provides relevant, competent cultural support services to the Crisis Hub team, and to the Well-Being Programs when available or needed.
- Provide intensive short-term support, crisis intervention and service coordination as a walk-in, or mobile in the community.
- Seek to balance the application of professional and clinical practices with the traditional Hodi:noshoni: culture and values as foundation.
- Show compassion, empathy, and responsiveness while understanding the impact each different crisis situation has on individuals/families of the Six Nations community.
- Instructs management and staff regarding aspects of Hodinohshoni culture, knowledge and practices to support health of clients and stabilization of crisis.
- Ensures cultural support services are delivered with excellence and conform to Ogwanohgwatrae:’ Tseh Niyogwai:ho`de
- Provides Gasgyao:nyok to Crisis Hub staff, clients and families
- Works collaboratively with traditional community leaders, Traditional Medicine Practitioners and Helpers for the provision of traditional medicines and practices for clients as well as staff well-being;
- Plans, organizes and coordinates cultural workshops, programming and activities, teachings and practices for clients and staff as required;
- Assists in the delivery of Ogwanohgwatrae:’ Tseh Niyogwai:ho`de services;
- Acts in a professionally appropriate manner both when working and not working, and is a positive role model for clients and staff;
Communications Functions:
- Provides continued updates and reports to the Crisis Hub Manager.
- Follows the appropriate protocols necessary with internal and external supports in order to effectively manage a crisis response.
- Work closely and collaboratively with all the Mental Wellness Teams.
- Attends staff and program meetings as required.
- Conducts presentations within the community on cultural supports and services as requested.
- Provides check-ins and follow-up with clients/community members who are in crisis.
Administrative Functions:
- Attends and participates as a team member in staff meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
- Maintains documentation according to the organization's policies and professional standards and guidelines.
- Completes documentation in relation to Mobile Crisis /Crisis Response
- Collection of stats and data specific to crisis response and client interactions.
- Employs effective decision-making skills to prioritize crisis response needs and understands the dynamics of individuals in crisis.
- Other Administrative functions as required, e.g., answering the telephone, answering messages, copying and filing, etc.
Other Functions:
- Provides support to cultural/traditional Crisis Hub initiatives in the community by providing educational support as directed by the Crisis Hub Manager.
- Any other related duties as may reasonably be required by the Crisis Hub Manager.
- It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to client safety, staff safety and risk management.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work requires physical activity and mental stress; requires working inside/outside; requires travel; requires extensive interactions with the public, who at times may be hostile or irate; subject to interruptions, deadlines, unscheduled hours.
Work requires the ability to prioritize tasks, work independently or in a team environment, and ability to cope with many demands and time constraints.
May need to respond to crisis after hours and on weekends. This may include responding to crisis in other communities.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Crisis Hub Manager
Receives direction and guidance and discusses plans, prioritizes to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively, receives instruction and supervision.
Other Staff
Promotes courtesy, co-operation and teamwork with all staff.
External Agencies
Views and interacts with all external agency staff as part of the response to mental wellness management. Maintains awareness of legislative policy and program changes; seeks to develop close working relationships.
With the Public
Represents and promotes the interests of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory community members; works in a courteous, co-operative, positive proactive manner, provides information and advice.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss credibility, poor public relation, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Director of Well-Being, Human Services Committee, Six Nations Elected Council, Government Agencies and the public.
CONTROL:
Guiding principles set by the Department of Well-Being and Six Nations Elected Council. Works within the administrative policies and procedures established by the Six Nations Elected Council for the Department of Well-Being and other legislation provided by the respective governments.
