Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Principal Mining Engineer to provide technical leadership and strategic direction for mining operations and projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for mine planning & scheduling, production optimization, technical governance, and supporting operational excellence initiatives across the business. This role works closely with operations, geology, processing, projects, and executive leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and economically optimized mining activities.
The ideal candidate is a strong technical leader with extensive underground and/or open pit mining experience, exceptional analytical capabilities, and proven success leading multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced mining environment.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Provide senior technical guidance and mentorship to mine engineering and technical services teams.
- Lead the development and review of short-, medium-, and long-range mine plans.
- Ensure mine designs and schedules align with operational, safety, environmental, and business objectives.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.
Mine Planning & Optimization
- Optimize mine sequencing, production scheduling, equipment utilization, and ore recovery.
- Conduct trade-off studies, economic evaluations, and scenario analyses to support strategic decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce costs, and maximize asset value.
- Support life-of-mine planning and reserve/resource conversion activities.
Operational Support
- Partner with site operations teams to achieve production targets safely and efficiently.
- Monitor operational performance against KPIs and recommend corrective actions where required.
- Support drill-and-blast optimization, ventilation planning, ground control strategies, and haulage efficiency initiatives as applicable.
- Participate in operational readiness and continuous improvement programs.
Projects & Studies
- Lead or support scoping, prefeasibility, feasibility, and execution-stage mining studies.
- Review capital projects, infrastructure requirements, and mine expansion opportunities.
- Coordinate inputs from geology, geotechnical, ventilation, survey, processing, and project teams.
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable mining regulations, industry standards, and corporate policies.
- Support risk assessments, technical audits, and management reviews.
- Prepare and review technical reports, presentations, and regulatory documentation.
- Act as a Qualified Person (QP) where applicable.
Training and Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related discipline.
- Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) in good standing.
- Minimum 10–15 years of progressive mining engineering experience.
- Strong experience in underground and/or open pit mining operations.
- Experience with mine planning software such as Deswik, Leapfrog, Vulcan, Datamine
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of mine economics, scheduling, ventilation, drill and blast, and production optimization.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
