Some Quick Notes About the Job...
- This is starting as a commission based job with potential to grow to full time. Pay is based on when you're booked at our studio or if we need you for other tasks here, like mixing work.
- We are partnered with a pro audio retail shop inside our facility called Blackout Audio, which offers attractive employee pricing.
- Flexible work hours is a must, as we look to expand our opening hours to stay open later.
- We are looking for a permanent candidate who would love to call our studio home, and doesn't think of producing or teaching music as "work"
About Matte Black Records...
Matte Black Records is a recording studio in Toronto's east end. We run two rooms, cover the full chain from tracking through mixing and mastering, and do 1-on-1 coaching for artists who want to actually learn the craft. We share our facility with Blackout Audio, a pro audio shop that is quickly growing and gaining popularity in Toronto, especially among DJs.
We're looking for a producer who can do three things well simply put. Make records people actually want to listen to. Teach what they know without talking down to anyone. And make every client want to book the next session before they've left the building.
What you'd be doing
- Producing and engineering sessions across popular genres (hip hop, R&B, pop, EDM, rock, whatever the artist is chasing)
- Writing and arranging when the session calls for it
- Coaching students one on one in production and audio engineering, meeting each one at their level
- Running sessions in a manner in which the experience itself could justify the reason clients come back
- Lending a hand on the Blackout Audio side when it fits, steering clients toward the right gear for example.
What we're looking for
- A real catalogue. We care more about what you've made than where you studied
- Range. You can sit down and write convincingly in more than one genre
- You can teach. You can break down an effect chain so a beginner student gets it and walks out stoked
- People skills. You're the kind of person clients remember and ask for by name
- Very comfortable in a popular DAW, Ableton Live is a bonus as that's what we use
- You live close enough to Dundas and Carlaw that travel isn't a problem
Nice to have
- You know gear. Interfaces, monitors, mics, and the why behind them, enough to talk shop on the Blackout Audio floor
- You've taught or mentored before
How to apply
Send some finished songs (at least 5), the more recent and the closer to the genres we named above, the better. A streaming link, a private SoundCloud, or a Drive folder all work.
A resume is welcome but it's not really what we're judging. The music does the talking, so skip the formal cover letter, we're more modern than that. We read everything that comes in with work attached and we'll get back to you within about a week if there's a fit.
