Position Summary
Reporting to the Division President, the role of the Director of Operations is responsible for driving operational excellence, ensuring seamless production and delivery in a dynamic environment. The Ideal applicant must be a seasoned professional, adept at optimizing end-to-end manufacturing processes and a strategic leader focused on efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Safety
- Work closely with the safety manager and branches to ensure compliance with policies, procedures and continuous development of safety standards and processes.
- Ensure management support and compliance with fleet, site, facility, training, meetings, communications, HS committee’s and monthly requirements.
- Assist in the development of new processes and policies to maintain a safe and healthy workplace for all staff.
Customer Service
- Oversee customer service and store operations management by maintaining service standards and building customer relationships.
- Utilize internal reports, processes, and procedures to help provide superior customer service.
- Assist managers with inventory needs when required to satisfy customer requests.
- Perform verification and safety checks of internal processes for shipping, orders, and site delivery QC.
- Ensure completion of monthly FCSR requirements.
Efficiency
- Regularly visit yards/ sites to perform audits on activities and performance.
- Perform all functions of operations processes and operate all related equipment.
- Prepare schedules, track volume demand, and establish priorities and procedures to meet business demands.
- Track, measure, and report on operational effectiveness and then investigate and resolve issues.
- Ensure shipping board, payloads, build up squares, and order auditing processes are completed.
- Identify areas of needed improvement to achieve our goal of on time, one time, every time.
- Assist in target setting and investigating staff KPI management.
- Monitor daily operating metrics to ensure employee efficiency and adherence to company policies.
Teamwork
- Motivate, lead, and develop Operations Team.
- Manage any territory Operations management, Driver Development, Equipment and fleet managers, Operations managers in direct relation with the ROM.
- Provide clear direction, objectives and updates to team members and managers to ensure an elevated level of effectiveness.
- Manage coordination of the shipping, warehouse, operations, and delivery teams.
- Conduct reviews with each team member utilizing pre-determined metrics.
- Track direct report goals and ensure utilization to maintain and grow employee engagement.
- Participate, plan, ensure active in required development engagements with team and customers (events)
- Travel as required to other branches and divisions.
Fleet
- Ensure vehicle maintenance program is in place and followed.
- Maintain the equipment audit schedule.
- Participate and manage the CAPEX plan in conjunction with the ROM’s, Fleet manager and COO.
- Ensure the correct licensing and annual inspection paperwork is on file and available in the company vehicles.
- Ensure process for invoice and quotes reviews
- Assist with fleet challenges and moving needed equipment around to accommodate sevice levels and volume.
Facility
- Ensure yards, warehouses and equipment are maintained according to company and government standards.
- Ensure that their HVAC/loading dock/first aid facility and cleaning schedules are up to date.
- Work with safety manager to ensure the completion of a fire drill at minimum annually in every location, and the correct number of first aid staff is maintained on shifts.
- Maintain correct visible safety markings on warehouse floors and all build up squares and loading zones.
Financial
- Closely monitor company expenses to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Work within operational budgets on people, facilities, and equipment to ensure the correct OPEX controls are in place to allow for required net margins.
- Ensure profit maximization while maintaining top level customer service.
- Ensure finance management and compliance with budgeting process in all yards.
Inventory
- Ensure that the correct receiving process is followed.
- Participate in quarterly inventory counts.
- Investigate losses.
- Ensure the write-off material and internal use standards are upheld by managers.
- Work with the CFO/Div heads to ensure the correct inventory turns are achieved
- Work with the departments to ensure deadstock is properly managed within targets
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and knowledge required.
- Proven experience in operations and manufacturing leadership roles, preferably in the building materials or construction industry.
- Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills with a purposeful mindset.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and people skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire cross-functional teams.
- Record of successfully meeting customer needs while maintaining cost-effectiveness and groundbreaking profit margins.
- Ability to travel as needed to build and maintain business relationships.
- JWSHSC training and certification.
- Certifications in first aid, forklift, fall protection, WHMIS and other applicable courses.
