Best Development Group is seeking a skilled, safety-focused Machine Operator to run a small excavator and skid steer, lead a crew of 1–2 laborers, and perform excavation and hardscaping work for new and replacement sidewalks, interlock installations, retaining walls, and landscaping projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate small excavator and skid steer safely and efficiently for sidewalk excavation, interlock preparation, retaining wall construction, and landscape grading.
Excavate and prepare grade lines, trenches, footings, and base materials per project plans and specifications.
Install interlock pavers, including base preparation, leveling, cutting, and final compaction.
Construct retaining walls, including excavation, base setup, block placement, alignment, and backfilling.
Backfill, compact, and grade areas to prepare for concrete sidewalks, pavers, retaining walls, and landscape installations.
Perform routine pre- and post-operation inspections, basic maintenance, fueling, and cleaning of equipment.
Ensure job sites are safe, organized, and compliant with company safety policies and local regulations.
Communicate with foreman/project manager about progress, material needs, and any issues that arise.
Keep accurate time, material, and daily production records as required.
Qualifications:
Proven experience operating small excavators and skid steers on residential/commercial civil, hardscaping, or landscape projects.
Experience installing interlock pavers and constructing retaining walls.
Prior experience supervising or leading a small crew preferred.
Valid driver’s license; clean driving record preferred (CDL not required unless specified).
Familiarity with site layout, grading, use of string lines, levels, and hand tools.
Ability to read simple site plans and follow instructions.
Strong commitment to safety and good communication skills.
Physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Certifications (preferred but not always required):
Equipment operator certifications or training for excavator/skid steer.
WHMIS and basic workplace safety training.
First aid/CPR is a plus.
