About the Opportunity
The Legal Counsel will report to the General Counsel and will be a key member of the Legal Team. The successful candidate will support a broad range of matters across all Shannex business divisions, including claims management and dispute resolution, privacy, corporate/commercial, legal operations, and general risk management.
- Act as a strategic partner to operating leaders, providing practical day-to-day legal advice to enable business objectives while managing risk.
- Provide privacy law support, including guidance on compliance obligations, incident response, and data-sharing practices.
- Liaise with external counsel on litigation, regulatory and employment & labour matters.
- Assist with the development, review and revision of policies and procedures.
- Contribute towards strategic planning and process improvement for the legal team.
- Partner with others to support investigations and compliance matters, and regarding general risk assessment and management.
- Deliver practical legal guidance and training to business teams, translating requirements into workable processes.
- Support the review, drafting and negotiation of a range of commercial agreements.
- Support business transactions, special projects and other general legal matters as needed
About You
In addition to placing high value on continuous improvement, collaboration and accountability, you bring:
- Completion of a degree in law (JD or LLB)
- Membership in good standing with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, or eligible for membership
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, preferably with a large law firm or in-house legal department
- Desire to apply your specialized expertise in any of the practice areas described in the “About the Opportunity” section while learning to practice as a generalist
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a structured, deadline-driven environment
- Strong communication skills, and the ability to work well independently and collaboratively
- Interest in technology, knowledge management, and process improvement
- Strong critical thinking, sound judgment, and risk awareness
- Experience in healthcare, seniors’ care, or another regulated sector is considered an asset
- Performs additional duties as required
