The Team:
The Resource Stewardship Division with the BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship plays a vital role in protecting and sustainably managing British Columbia’s natural resources for current and future generations. Working at the intersection of science, policy, and land-use planning, the division supports responsible stewardship of water, land, ecosystems, and biodiversity across the province. Team members collaborate with Indigenous Nations, government partners, stakeholders, and communities to balance environmental, social, and economic priorities. The Role:
The Skeena Ecosystems Section plays a key role in supporting sustainable resource management by providing biological expertise that informs government decisions, major project reviews, and environmental stewardship initiatives across northwest British Columbia. This position contributes to ecosystem conservation and habitat protection through permit and application reviews, science-based analysis, and expert advice on land use planning and resource development activities. Working as part of a collaborative team, the Ecosystems Biologist supports species-at-risk recovery, habitat restoration, and conservation planning while fostering strong partnerships with First Nations, stakeholders, industry, and government agencies. Qualifications:
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree or higher in biological sciences or equivalent (e.g., natural resource management, ecology, zoology, hydrology, forestry, etc.) and three (3) years of related experience.
Related Experience must be a combination of the following:
- Experience in field-based biological sampling, analysis, and reporting.
- Experience in conducting environmental monitoring and assessments.
- Experience providing scientific/ecological advice within a regulatory regime.
- Experience collaborating and/or consulting with First Nations on resource management issues.
Professional Registration and Certification Requirements:
- Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the College of Applied Biologists (CAB). Note: “Immediately eligible for registration” means meeting all requirements for full professional registration and completing the process of obtaining full registration with the relevant BC professional association within six (6) months of employment.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience with fish and aquatic habitat values.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid BC driver’s licence.
- Must meet safety standards of WorkSafeBC.
- Must be willing and able to travel, including working evenings, weekends, and holidays when required.
- Must be willing and able to conduct physically demanding field work.
- Must be willing and able to carry and operate a variety of equipment, as required.
- Must be willing and able to conduct field work that may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions, and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

This position can be located in Burns Lake, Smithers or Terrace.
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
