About Chimax
Chimax Inc. is a professional engineering firm with a long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality substation, switchyard, and transmission and distribution line engineering to clients in the utility, renewable energy, oil and gas, and mining sectors. With strong presence in the utility sector, Chimax is expanding its electrical engineering services for transmission division.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for a skilled and motivated 3D Designer to join the Chimax Electrical Engineering Division. Working closely with our electrical and protection & control design teams, you will be a key contributor to the physical design of high-voltage substations and associated electrical infrastructure — bringing designs to life through detailed 3D modelling that directly supports project delivery for Chimax clients in the utility and industrial sectors.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Develop comprehensive 3D models of high-voltage substations, control/switchgear buildings,— including equipment layouts, cable and conduit routing, and grounding systems — using Autodesk Inventor, Substation Design Suite (SDS) – Physical, and Revit.
- Generate accurate bills of material (BOM) derived directly from 3D models to support procurement and construction activities.
- Build and maintain an internal library of reusable substation design components, improving consistency and efficiency across projects.
- Contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of internal design procedures, standards, and templates.
- Perform substation and plant lightning protection, lighting, and bus design calculations and analyses informed by 3D model data.
- Work with raw 3D scan data for brownfield substation projects and site verification where applicable.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with civil, structural, and electrical team members, reflecting Chimax’s integrated multi-discipline approach.
WHAT YOU BRING
- A minimum of 4 years of hands-on 3D design experience; junior candidates with relevant training or academic backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply — mentorship and structured development will be provided.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, Revit, or Substation Design Suite (SDS) is a strong asset; a demonstrated ability to learn new design platforms is equally valued.
- Membership (Associate or Full) with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) in an Electrical, Mechanical, or Construction discipline is an asset, not a requirement.
- Familiarity with the electrical, mechanical, or civil aspects of substation design is an advantage; a willingness to develop this knowledge is equally welcomed.
- A self-directed work ethic with the ability to manage assignments and deliverables with minimal supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
