Head of Roasting

Even Coffee is seeking an experienced, capable, and highly organized Head of Roasting to lead the day-to-day operation of our roastery.
This position is responsible for maintaining exceptional coffee quality, coordinating production, managing inventory and fulfillment, and ensuring the roastery operates efficiently, accurately, and safely.
The ideal candidate is independent, dependable, and comfortable taking ownership of their work while remaining a collaborative and supportive team player. They communicate clearly, work effectively across departments, and understand how roasting, production, fulfillment, wholesale, café operations, and marketing depend on one another.
Most importantly, they have a genuine drive to learn, improve, and excel within the coffee industry. They are curious, receptive to feedback, highly engaged in their craft, and motivated to continuously strengthen their roasting, sensory, technical, and operational skills.
Key Responsibilities
Roasting and Quality Control
- Develop, refine, document, and maintain production roast profiles.
- Roast all production coffee according to established quality standards.
- Conduct sample roasting, cuppings, and regular production evaluations.
- Record roast curves, colour measurements, weight loss, sensory results, and production notes in Cropster.
- Identify quality inconsistencies and make appropriate profile or process adjustments.
- Lead weekly production and calibration cuppings.
Production and Release Planning
- Create and manage weekly roasting and production schedules.
- Coordinate coffee releases across the roastery, café, wholesale, webshop, and marketing teams.
- Ensure coffee is roasted, rested, packaged, and available according to order and release requirements.
- Monitor green-coffee usage, projected depletion dates, and production risks.
- Support green-coffee purchasing and forecasting with the Director of Coffee and Owner.
Fulfillment and Inventory
- Oversee webshop, wholesale, and café order fulfillment.
- Ensure orders are packaged accurately, completed on time, and prepared for shipping.
- Manage inventory of green coffee, roasted coffee, packaging materials, labels, shipping supplies, and production consumables.
- Establish minimum stock levels and reorder points.
- Maintain accurate inventory and production records.
Roastery Operations
- Serve as the primary operational point of contact for the roastery.
- Coordinate daily production activities and assign work to roastery staff.
- Prepare weekly staff schedules according to production needs.
- Train staff and provide clear feedback and operational direction.
- Improve production workflow, packaging efficiency, labour allocation, and order accuracy.
- Communicate production issues, delays, equipment concerns, and quality risks proactively.
Equipment, Safety, and Systems
- Manage preventative maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting of roastery equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and production-ready workplace.
- Ensure food-safety, equipment-use, cleaning, and workplace-safety procedures are followed.
- Manage roastery operations within Cropster and Shopify.
- Maintain procedures, checklists, schedules, and operational reporting.
Qualifications
- Professional coffee-roasting experience, preferably in specialty coffee.
- Strong understanding of roast-profile development, quality control, and sensory evaluation.
- Experience using Cropster or comparable roasting and production software.
- Strong production-planning, organizational, and inventory-management skills.
- Ability to work independently, take ownership, and manage competing priorities.
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach to working across departments.
- Experience supervising or training production staff is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail, accountability, and operational follow-through.
- A demonstrated commitment to learning, professional development, and excellence in coffee.
What Success Looks Like
The Head of Roasting ensures that coffee is roasted consistently, production is completed on schedule, releases are coordinated effectively, orders are accurate, inventory is maintained, and the roastery remains clean, organized, safe, and operational.
This role is well suited to someone who takes ownership of their department, works well with others, identifies problems before they affect production, and continually improves systems for quality, efficiency, and accountability.
Compensation
$58,000–$65,000 annually, based on experience and demonstrated roasting, quality-control, and operational-management capabilities.
Pay: $60,000.00-$65,000.00 per year
