Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Grade Man to join our Asphalt Prep Crew. This role plays a vital part in preparing job sites for asphalt paving, ensuring accurate grading and surface prep. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with grade checking, skid steer operation, and physical labour.
This position is physically demanding and requires a combination of machine operation (primarily skid steer) and manual labour, including raking, shoveling, and site layout.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set and maintain proper grade using laser levels and string lines.
- Operate a skid steer to move gravel, fine grade, backfill, and prep surfaces for paving.
- Read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, and elevations.
- Assist with layout, ground prep, and compaction of sub-grade and base materials.
- Perform physical labour including raking, shoveling, and assisting with site clean-up.
- Work closely with the foreman, laborers, and operators to maintain grade and productivity.
- Ensure grading is accurate and consistent to avoid rework and ensure a smooth final surface.
- Maintain equipment and tools in proper working condition.
- Comply with all company safety policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in grading and skid steer operation in a construction or asphalt setting.
- Comfortable with both machine operation and physical/manual labour.
- Proficient with grading tools and techniques (laser level, etc.).
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings and grade stakes.
- Good physical condition – able to lift, bend, walk, and work on uneven surfaces for extended periods.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license required; clean driving record preferred.

Compensation:
- Competitive hourly wage based on experience.
