Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is seeking a knowledgeable and compassionate Disability Case Specialist to join our Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness team.
In this highly collaborative and impactful role, you will support employees through periods of illness or injury by managing disability cases, adjudicating Short Term Disability (STD) claims, and leading safe and timely return-to-work (RTW) planning. You will work closely with employees, leaders, union representatives, healthcare professionals, and external partners to ensure employees are supported in their recovery while maintaining operational effectiveness.
This role plays a critical part in enhancing employee well-being, reinforcing a supportive workplace culture, and minimizing disability-related impacts across the organization.
- Adjudicate Short Term Disability (STD) claims, including review and interpretation of medical documentation
- Lead and coordinate return-to-work (RTW) planning in collaboration with employees and workplace partners
- Manage a complex caseload, ensuring timely follow-up, documentation, and case progression
- Partner with managers, unions, Occupational Health Nurses, and external disability carriers to support case outcomes
- Participate in grievance, mediation, and arbitration processes as required
- Complete administrative transactions (e.g., SAP approvals, Kronos, ESP documentation)
- Contribute to continuous improvement of disability management practices and processes
- Diploma in a health-related discipline (e.g., Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Human Resources) or related field (minimum requirement)
- Degree in a related discipline preferred
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in disability management, including physical and psychological claims
- Proven experience developing and implementing RTW plans
- Experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset
- Strong knowledge of disability management best practices, including early and safe return to work
- Working knowledge of medical conditions, functional abilities, and recovery guidelines
- Demonstrated ability to interpret legislation, including Human Rights and Duty to Accommodate principles
- Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills across diverse stakeholders
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills in complex and sensitive situations
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities
- High level of discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel); experience with electronic documentation systems is an asset
- Proven ability to attend work regularly
- Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role
