SUMMARY: The Summer Camp Inclusion Counsellor is responsible for guiding and leading experiences for children in the outdoor, natural setting of Westminster Ponds, with a particular focus on inclusive camp programming and 1:1 support for children. They are responsible for the safety, supervision, development, and growth of the campers in their care. The incumbent will provide engaging, emergent, accessible, outdoor opportunities for campers.
TERM: 40 hours weekly, occurring between June 29-August 28, 2026.
Due to the requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs program, applicants must meet ALL criteria:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide attentive, equitable, and engaging day camp experiences for children 5-9 years.
- Offer opportunities that are inclusive of campers of all abilities and needs.
- Act as a 1:1 counsellor for campers with support needs when required.
- Guide campers in intentional, meaningful, fun child-led activities and learning opportunities.
- Build meaningful relationships with campers, parents, and coworkers.
- Communicate with parents/guardians about camper experiences; offer or obtain information to improve camper’s experience.
- Ensure organization policies and procedures for working with children are implemented.
- Work cooperatively with co-counsellors, site Coordinator and Supervisor to ensure a positive work environment.
- Follow policies for communication and conflict resolution.
- Interact with campers using positive guidance and communication techniques.
- As a team, clean and sanitize day camp resources and facilities daily, and ensure sanitization protocols are followed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Licences & Certifications:
- Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate
- Successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with children in the day camp or recreation environment.
- Knowledge of emergent curriculum and child-led learning.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with children with special needs or identified support needs (e.g. autism spectrum disorders, physical needs support, emotional regulation support).
- Knowledge of inclusive and accessible childcare, camp, and/or outdoor education programming.
- Comfort in and understanding of the natural, forested environment.
- Knowledge of native trees, vegetation, animals and insects.
- Skills in empathy, adaptability, initiative, problem solving, stress management.
- Positive attitude and willingness to grow personally as a leader.
- Understanding of and commitment to anti-racism, equity and inclusion in camp and/or childcare settings.
- Priority will be given to Black, Indigenous, and racialized peoples, and people speaking more than one language.
- Commitment to work the entire camp session (June 29-August 28). Time off will not be granted in conflict with camp hours.
