Job Overview
AMTEL is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented technician to operate our Dynamic Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry—D-SIMS—instrument and assist with the processing and organization of analytical data.
The D-SIMS instrument is used to measure very small concentrations of elements contained within solid materials. In mineralogical applications, it can determine trace and solid-solution elements present within individual mineral grains, even where those elements do not occur as visible mineral inclusions. The instrument performs these measurements by directing an ion beam onto the sample surface and analyzing the secondary ions released from the material.
This position is suited to someone with an interest in scientific instrumentation, mineralogy, electronics, laboratory work, or analytical data processing. Previous D-SIMS experience is not required; instrument-specific training will be provided.
Night-Shift Requirement
The D-SIMS instrument is intended to operate continuously, 24 hours per day. The successful applicant must therefore be available to work regular overnight shifts.
The anticipated night shift is:
11:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.
Some flexibility may be required for weekend coverage, shift handovers, instrument maintenance, training, and operational requirements. Applicants should be comfortable working independently during overnight hours while following established operating and safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Operate the D-SIMS instrument according to established analytical procedures.
- Load, unload, and position prepared mineral and solid-material samples.
- Monitor instrument performance during analytical runs.
- Confirm that samples, standards, analytical locations, and run conditions are correctly identified.
- Review analytical sequences and respond to instrument alarms or interruptions.
- Process, organize, and perform preliminary quality checks on analytical data.
- Document and communicate instrument problems to the next operator or laboratory supervisor.
- Complete clear shift handovers, including the status of active runs, upcoming samples, consumables, and outstanding issues.
- Follow laboratory safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Assist with other laboratory and sample-preparation duties when required.
Qualifications
The ideal applicant will have one or more of the following:
- College diploma, university degree, or practical experience in science, engineering, electronics, instrumentation, geology, mineralogy, chemistry, physics, or a related field.
- Previous experience operating analytical, laboratory, manufacturing, vacuum, electronic, or automated equipment.
- Experience with electronics, electrical systems, mechanical systems, computers, or instrument troubleshooting.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow written procedures consistently.
- Basic computer proficiency and comfort working with analytical software, spreadsheets, and organized data files.
- Ability to identify unusual instrument behaviour and report problems clearly.
- Ability to work independently and remain attentive during overnight shifts.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
Experience with mass spectrometry, SIMS, electron microscopy, mineralogical analysis, vacuum systems, scientific instrumentation, or laboratory quality-control procedures is an asset but is not required.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in an analytical laboratory.
- The position involves extended periods of monitoring computer screens and instrument systems.
- Some standing, bending, sample handling, and light lifting may be required.
- The employee may occasionally work near vacuum equipment, electronics, pumps, compressed gases, and other laboratory systems.
- Appropriate safety training and personal protective equipment will be provided.
Position Expectations
Because the D-SIMS instrument may run continuously for extended periods, reliability and careful documentation are essential. The operator must be able to monitor ongoing analyses, recognize potential problems, protect the integrity of the samples and data, and provide an accurate handover to the incoming shift.
