Neighbours Community Homes is Toronto’s leading non-profit supportive housing agency with a 45-year track record of excellence. Neighbours offers permanent, affordable housing and social programs to support individuals challenged by complex mental illness and addiction, including those who are homeless or otherwise marginalized. We own 53 buildings with 1400 supportive housing units. We provide support services and/or rent subsidies to tenants in 250 units in the rental market. Neighbours Community Homes works closely with sector partners to deliver programs and advocate for solutions that will address homelessness and end the legacy of institutionalization.
About the role:
The Housing Support Worker works alongside tenants and participants and is responsible for providing services to improve tenant mental health, housing stability, unit conditions and for facilitating activities that will build a more harmonious community. The incumbent delivers flexible, innovative and tenant-centred programs and services using mental health recovery principles and applying the harm reduction approach. The Housing Support Worker reports to the Housing Support Manager and works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team with staff from the Property Services and Finance Departments and external service providers as required. This position may occasionally supervise practicum students or Supportive Employment Program participants.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assess tenants’ needs and provide coaching and practical support or refer to services to fulfil unmet needs.
- Provide informal counseling on mental health and/or addiction, interpersonal relationships, life skills, food security, and meaningful activities using non-judgmental, recovery, and harm reduction approaches.
- Provide warm referrals to other community services and/or health services and collaborate with these service providers.
- Provide advocacy services to tenants for their service or benefits rights.
- Support move-ins, unit viewings, orientations, and tenant education around rights and responsibilities.
- Assist tenants with income verification, RGI documentation, and reporting household changes.
- Provide eviction-prevention support on rent arrears, behaviour, safety issues, unit conditions, hoarding, and pests.
- Organize and facilitate group activities and community events, such as building meetings, life skills programs, meal programs, social recreation programs, and organizational events.
- Encourage tenants to improve overall building environments such as cleanliness, prevention of trespassers, personal safety concerns, noise reduction, fire safety, and physical appearance.
- Respond to all calls that are forwarded from Tiger Tel (Neighbours after-hours call center) to the dedicated Emergency After-Hours cell phone.
- Work on-call hours, evenings and weekends as scheduled. Attending to after-hours emergencies including fires/floods, tenants passing away, respond to calls from emergency services (fire ambulance police), tenants in distress, and tenant health emergencies.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to household pests, bodily fluids, individuals experiencing crises, individuals who may be under the influence of substances, cleaning chemicals and some smoking environments.
- Working hours are 35 hours per week.
- Work on-call hours including evenings and weekends (the roster is 7 days) up to 3-4 times a year.
What we are looking for:
- Undergraduate Degree in Social Work, Social Services, or related fields.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in serving people living in poverty who have experienced homelessness and/or are precariously housed and have mental health and/or addiction issues.
- Knowledge of Mental Health Recovery Approach, Harm Reduction principles, Residential Tenancies Act, Mental Health Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
- Availability of working on-call hours is based on weekly rotation up to three times a year.
- Have an eye for cleanliness and ability to perform light housekeeping duties.
- Ability to work flexible shifts including evenings and weekends.
As a condition of employment, a successful police record check for Vulnerable Sector is required. Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the country where this role is located.
