Job Overview
The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the financial operations and accounting functions of a commercial property management portfolio. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, budget management, cash flow monitoring, and effective oversight of property accounting activities. The Accounting Manager works closely with property managers, the leasing team, and senior leadership to support financial performance and operational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations.
- Prepare and review annual financial statements, including working papers for external accountants.
- Ensure accurate recording of revenues, expenses, accruals, and journal entries.
- Review and reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and balance sheet accounts.
- Maintain accounting records in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions and backup these positions when required.
- Maintain and update the general ledger when necessary.
Property Accounting
- Monitor rent rolls, tenant receivables, lease accounting, and revenue recognition.
- Review tenant billings, CAM reconciliations, and operating expense recoveries.
- Ensure accurate accounting for security deposits, prepaid rents, and tenant improvements.
- Coordinate and review budgets, forecasts, and operational expenses with property managers and the construction team.
- Analyze property performance and provide variance explanations.
Compliance & Audit
- Ensure compliance with tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare supporting documentation for external accountants as required.
- Maintain internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Preparation and review of monthly HST filings.
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise and mentor property accountants, accounting analysts, and support staff.
- Assign and prioritize work, review work quality, and support employee development.
- Establish and improve accounting processes and workflows.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve financial and operational efficiency.
- Act as Administrator and main contact with Yardi customer support.
Qualifications and Experience
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- 2+ years in a supervisory or management role.
- Experience in property management, real estate, commercial property accounting, or real estate investment companies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Advanced proficiency in Yardi Voyager is an asset.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Proven ability to lead teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
- Strong financial acumen with demonstrated budgeting and analytical capabilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Education and Designations
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA, CMA, CGA, or equivalent professional designation.
Work Schedule
Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Pay: $110,000.00-$125,000.00 per year
