Join Our Surgical Team: Operating Room LPN
Are you a dedicated, detail-oriented nursing professional with a passion for perioperative care?
We are currently seeking an exceptional Operating Room Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our dynamic surgical team. In this critical frontline role, you will provide safe, competent, and compassionate care to patients throughout their surgical journey. Functioning as a key player in the operating room, you will have the opportunity to utilize your expertise as both a scrub nurse and a circulating nurse, while also providing excellent post-operative care in the Recovery Room.
Reporting to the Director of Surgical Operations, and taking daily direction from the OR Coordinator, you will ensure our operating rooms run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.
What You Will Do
As a versatile member of our surgical team, your day-to-day will be dynamic and highly collaborative. Your primary responsibilities will span across three critical phases of patient care:
Intra-Operative Care (Scrub & Circulator Roles)
- As a Scrub Nurse: You will perform standardized surgical hand scrubs, set up and flawlessly maintain sterile fields, prepare instruments, and anticipate the surgeon’s needs using strict aseptic techniques.
- As a Circulating Nurse: You will prepare the OR equipment, assist with patient admissions (verifying identity and consent), actively lead the Surgical Safety Checklist, monitor patient safety and sterile field integrity, and accurately document all peri-operative events.
- Team Collaboration: Partner with your nursing counterparts to perform 100% accurate surgical counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments.
Pre/Post & Recovery Unit
- Receive formal handoff reports and admit patients to the unit.
- Monitor patients closely during the recovery phase, assessing vital signs, level of consciousness, and pain levels.
- Administer post-operative medications within your scope of practice and assist in preparing patients for safe discharge.
- Act quickly to identify and report any post-operative complications to the RN or Surgeon.
Safety, Infection Control & Quality Assurance
- Meticulously adhere to all Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) policies, including proper PPE usage and hand hygiene.
- Handle the safe transport of soiled instruments and perform comprehensive environmental cleaning (between-case turnovers and end-of-day terminal cleaning).
- Participate proactively in bi-annual emergency drills (Code Blue, Fire, Anaphylaxis) and maintain expert knowledge of the emergency resuscitation cart.
What You Bring to the Team
To be successful in this fast-paced and highly rewarding role, you must meet the following core qualifications:
Licensure & Mandatory Authorizations:
- Active registration in good standing as an LPN with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).
Experience & Certifications:
- A minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in a perioperative (OR/Recovery) or surgical setting.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. (Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is highly recommended but not required).
- Expert, hands-on knowledge of aseptic technique, sterile field management, surgical instrumentation, and patient safety protocols.
- Bonus: Knowledge of Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) workflows is considered a strong asset.
