Mental Health Lead - Full-time Permanent
35 hours weekly

The Mental Health Lead will hold a graduate degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in counselling, social work, psychology, or a related field, with demonstrated experience providing clinical services and coordinating case management for children, youth, and families with mental health and/or addictions concerns. The role involves supervising case management, providing clinical consultation to students and staff, and making evidence-informed recommendations grounded in implementation science and effective knowledge mobilization within school settings. The Mental Health Lead will also facilitate and support adult, professional, and staff learning, serve as a resource or partner on internal committees and with community agencies, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. A strong appreciation and understanding of the philosophy and culture of a Catholic school system is essential, along with excellent organizational, communication, and coordination skills, sound judgment, sensitivity in oral and written communications, and a strong commitment to confidentiality.
Essential Qualification
Education / Certification
Masters’ degree in a related discipline (e.g. Social Work, Psychology, Psychiatry).
Registered health professional and member in good standing of a Professional regulatory board in Ontario (e.g., Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers).
Experience Required
Minimum of 5 years of experience in mental health service delivery (promotion, prevention, intervention) as a senior mental health professional working with children and youth.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge, understanding, and/or experience working within a school board setting, as well as familiarity with the Ontario Comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Strategy and the Catholic Care Association of Canada Health Care Ethics Guide.
Key Activities
Use clinical experience to work within the School Mental Health Ontario framework to coordinate, align and implement a board- wide Mental Health Strategy and Action Plan, while supporting the overall multi-year strategic plan and the Student Achievement Plan. Collaborate with stakeholders to support and implement Ministry of Education expectations for Mental Health Leaders, aligned with School Mental Health Ontario.
The Mental Health Lead will enhance school board capacity to address student mental health and addictions needs by:

Working with system leaders and school administrators to develop, implement, and manage a mental health strategy;

Provide board-wide direction in Mental Health and wellness promotion, education, initiatives, resources, policies, and procedures;

Supporting capacity building learning opportunities focused on student mental health and addictions;
- Collaborating with community partners and Ministry staff to share learning and resources;
- Serving as a liaison with School Mental Health Ontario and sharing and providing professional learning created at the provincial level;
- Applying their knowledge and clinical skills in supervising, training and supporting school mental health workers, Child and Youth Workers, and attendance counselors;
- Being accountable for, and preparing plans and reports, on initiative funding by the Ministry of Education;
- Leading intervention needs for tragic events;
- Working with staff, families and students in order to provide access to high quality services and provide early intervention in child and youth mental health and addictions needs;

Attend Ministry and regional meetings to share information with board stakeholders;

Demonstrated knowledge of legislative and regulatory frameworks governing mental health services and privacy protection in educational settings, including the Mental Health Act, PHIPA, and applicable Ministry policies.
Skills and Knowledge
Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act, working knowledge of the Personal Health Information Protection Act, the Education Act and the Ministry of Education’s mental health and addictions strategy to develop effective recommendations for building a Board Mental Health and Well-being Strategy and subsequently implementing and assessing the corresponding operational plan.
An understanding of the principles of effective leadership, including the ability to have courageous conversations, inspiring confidence, building a shared vision, building relationships and developing people and securing accountability.
Understanding of federal, provincial and local laws, statutes, and/or policies that relate to students and families (e.g. child protection / child abuse, special education, school attendance and education rights, privacy).
Knowledge and understanding of the implementation resources available through School Mental Health Ontario to enhance the quality and consistency of mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention programming in Ontario schools.
Strong knowledge of the theories and principles to properly conduct needs assessments, perform research and resource mapping to identify specific service delivery gaps in order to implement evidence-based programming.
