Consumer Protection BC is looking for an Enforcement Inspector to join our team! If you are interested, review the job description and apply online by uploading your cover letter and resume (in one document) and answering a few pre-screening questions in our application portal.
Day in the life:
After a few days of heads down work at home, you’re ready to collaborate in-person with colleagues and tackle a large, complex complaint file involving a regulated business where the facts are not straightforward. Before making any recommendations, you review the records, identify gaps in the evidence, and consider whether additional interviews or inspections are needed. You are focused on understanding what happened through evidence-based analysis, applying the relevant legislation fairly, and ensuring your work can support clear and defensible regulatory action.
Later in the day, you connect with a business operator to explain their obligations and discuss next steps to address concerns identified during your investigation. You balance education and enforcement carefully, recognizing when voluntary compliance may be appropriate and when the circumstances require the use of formal regulatory powers. To advance your investigation, you issue an Inspection Order requiring the production of records and information, including financial and other sensitive business records relevant to the investigation. In the afternoon, you conclude that another file warrants enforcement action. You prepare a comprehensive report summarizing the evidence, legislative analysis, and recommended next steps, knowing that your work will be relied on to support the allegations in administrative hearings, reconsiderations, or judicial review proceedings.
As you close your laptop for the day, you reflect on the balance this role requires: independence and collaboration, education and enforcement, sound judgment and care. It is meaningful work that helps protect consumers and supports a fair marketplace across BC.
Who you are:
-
An adaptable, positive and collaborative regulatory or legal professional who is comfortable working independently.
-
A clear communicator who can explain complex legal requirements to businesses, complainants, witnesses, colleagues and external partners.
-
A trusted analytical thinker who brings discretion, fairness, integrity and sound judgment to sensitive matters.
What you will be doing:
-
Conducting complex investigations involving regulated businesses across BC by reviewing records, interviewing parties, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
-
Exercising delegated statutory authority to compel the production of records and information, including financial, banking and other sensitive business records.
-
Analyzing evidence, legislation, policy and business practices to identify non-compliance, assess risk and determine appropriate regulatory responses.
-
Working directly with businesses, consumers, legal counsel and other stakeholders on complex, sensitive and often contentious matters.
-
Preparing evidence-based reports, recommendations and materials that support enforcement action, regulatory decision-making and related proceedings.
We are looking for people who have:
-
Experience conducting investigations or compliance-related work in a regulatory, administrative or public sector environment
-
A diploma in legal studies or a law degree is considered an asset.
-
Strong ability to interpret and apply legislation, policy and administrative law principles.
-
Experience writing documents that support formal decisions or legal proceedings.
-
Excellent judgment, analytical thinking and written communication skills.
The application process:
-
The full application process will take approximately four weeks to complete.
-
Steps in the application process include application screening, telephone interview, in-person interview, professional references and a criminal record check.
-
We do not consider incomplete applications, including those without cover letters, resumes and/or written responses to pre-screening questions.
