OVERVIEW
The Family and Newborn (FAN) Registered Midwife (RM) plays a crucial role in our community, reporting to the Chief of Midwifery and Manager of MNC. They are responsible for the day-to-day clinical running of the FAN clinic, providing comprehensive postpartum care for parents and newborns during the first eight weeks following childbirth. Their care includes day-one home visits for those in the early discharge program, bereavement support, routine postpartum care for unattached families at MGH, and referrals from within our hospital, such as the emergency department. They understand the concepts of the social determinants of health and strive to address them to enhance the health outcomes in our community.
The FAN midwife plays a crucial role in our healthcare team, fostering excellent working relationships by communicating effectively with community midwives, obstetrical and pediatric consultants, and other healthcare team members. They are enthusiastic, skilled at supporting learners, and comfortable teaching and mentoring. They are effective in their time management skills by being efficient while responsive to the needs of their patients and consultants.
Depending on clinical volumes, the FAN midwife may assist in the Family Birthing Centre in various capacities, including but not limited to providing midwifery care during labour and birth, and postpartum.
