We are currently seeking a motivated, safety-focused, and mechanically inclined Gas Utility Operator to join our team. At Dinosaur Gas, no two days are the same. This position involves everything from construction and maintenance of gas distribution systems, to emergency response, leak detection, inspections, customer service, and general operations support. The successful candidate must be comfortable working independently, adapting to changing priorities, and contributing wherever needed to support the operation of the utility.
Experience working around natural gas systems, pressure systems, piping, regulators, compressors, or related oilfield/gas industry operations is considered a must. Previous experience specifically as a Gas Utility Operator is preferred, but not required. Dinosaur Gas is willing to train the right candidate who demonstrates strong mechanical ability, safety awareness, and a willingness to learn.
Position: Gas Utility Operator
Reports To: General Manager
Location: Brooks, Alberta
Position Summary
The Gas Utility Operator is responsible for the safe construction, operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of Dinosaur Gas Co-op’s natural gas distribution infrastructure. This role supports the ongoing integrity and reliability of the gas system while ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards, operating procedures, and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with management and staff to support safe operations, emergency response, system maintenance, and positive member relations.
Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction & Installation
- Install, repair, and maintain natural gas distribution mains, services, and meters
- Perform butt fusion, electrofusion, and mechanical fitting installations
- Conduct pressure testing and air testing on new installations
- Build and install meter sets and bypass bars to code
- Connect and disconnect natural gas services safely
- Verify permits and private system testing prior to service connection
Operations & Maintenance
- Inspect, maintain, and rebuild block valves, regulators, and intermediate stations
- Perform PFM testing and annual pressure checks
- Conduct station inspections, alarm testing, and filter maintenance
- Complete meter exchanges and ERT programming
- Install, activate, and remove irrigation meters
- Perform odorant system inspections and calculations
- Maintain shop organization, tools, inventory, and facilities
Locating & Leak Detection
- Locate low and high-pressure gas lines for Alberta One Call requests
- Perform leak detection and corrective actions as required
- Support internal construction and excavation projects
Customer Service & Emergency Response
- Respond to odorant complaints, carbon monoxide calls, and gas leaks
- Repair deficiencies related to co-op-owned equipment
- Maintain positive working relationships with members and the public
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with OH&S, AER, CSA, and operational requirements
- Perform equipment inspections and calibrations
- Participate in monthly safety and operations meetings
- Assist with hazard assessments and emergency response activities
Additional Duties
- Assist with inventory counts, signage installation, and general maintenance
- Provide backup support for locating and first-call response
- Support special projects and system improvements as assigned
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience working with natural gas systems, pressure systems, piping systems, regulators, compressors, or related oilfield/gas operations is required
- Gas Utility Operator certification or direct gas utility experience is preferred, but not mandatory
- Willingness to learn and participate in ongoing training and certification
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Ability to work safely both independently and within a very small team environment
- Comfortable performing a wide variety of operational, maintenance, construction, and emergency-response tasks
- Strong understanding of safety procedures and regulatory compliance
- Ability to read and interpret codes, standards, and operational manuals
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required (Class 3 considered an asset)

Pay: $56,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
