As the university’s centre for expertise in teaching and learning, CTL supports instructors, academic leaders, and programs through research-informed, inclusive, and student-centred approaches that strengthen teaching practice and meaningful student learning experiences.
Guided by institutional priorities, including Shape: A Strategic Plan of Impact, Braiding Past, Present and Future, and Changing the Story, CTL contributes to teaching and learning initiatives that support instructional effectiveness, reflective teaching practice, student engagement, and continuous improvement across the university.
The Centre is committed to advancing inclusive, anti-colonial, and relational approaches to teaching and learning. This includes critically examining colonial structures within higher education while supporting the integration of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing into teaching, learning, curriculum, and assessment practices.
Working collaboratively across faculties and institutional units, CTL creates opportunities for reflection, peer learning, innovation, and partnership that strengthen teaching and learning across diverse disciplinary and academic contexts.
Position Summary
The Centre for Teaching and Learning is seeking motivated undergraduate students at the University of Alberta to participate in the Student Instructor Partnership Program (SIPP). At CTL, we help instructors achieve their teaching goals and support the University of Alberta in advancing its teaching and learning priorities. We believe that true teaching excellence requires engaging multiple perspectives, including the voices of our students. Unlike traditional assistant roles, SIPP treats students as collaborative partners who bring their lived experience as learners to the heart of course design.
As a Student Partner, you will be matched in a collaborative triad, consisting of two students and one instructor, to redesign or develop a course. This unique partnership allows you to move beyond the role of a student and act as a pedagogical consultant, providing a student's lens on everything from refining the syllabus to creating meaningful assignments.
Timeline and Commitment
Orientation: Student partners are required to participate in a half-day orientation session on August 28, 2026 from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
Core Project: Most of the collaborative work will take place during the Fall 2026 semester, with an average of 3-8 hours per week.
Showcase: The program concludes with a collaborative presentation alongside your instructor partner at the annual Festival of Teaching and Learning in April 2027.
