Full-Time Automotive Inspection & Diagnostic Technician
The Great Northern Auction (TGNA) — Moncton, NB
The Great Northern Auction is hiring a full-time Automotive Inspection & Diagnostic Technician to join our team in Moncton.
This is not a typical retail garage job.
Our technicians help people make better vehicle decisions. Every week, buyers and sellers rely on vehicle information to decide what a car is worth, what it needs, what should be disclosed, and whether it is the right vehicle for them. Your job is to help make that information clear.
We are looking for someone who is strong in diagnosis, mechanical assessment, pre-auction inspections, and post-sale inspections.
What You’ll Do
You’ll work with our auction, inspection, and yard teams to assess vehicles before and after sale, as well as help keep our own operation running smoothly.
Responsibilities include:
- Completing pre-auction mechanical inspections.
- Supporting post-sale inspections for buyers.
- Diagnosing check-engine lights, warning lights, drivability issues, and mechanical concerns.
- Maintaining and repairing the auction’s internal fleet of operational vehicles and equipment.
- Identifying safety, MVI, and disclosure-related items.
- Helping determine what should be repaired, announced, or sold as-is.
- Preparing clear inspection notes for condition reports and auction announcements.
- Performing light mechanical repairs when appropriate, including brakes, batteries, tires, suspension, fluids, and minor repairs.
- Helping buyers and sellers understand what they purchased or what may be affecting a vehicle’s value.
- Reducing surprises by making vehicle information clearer before and after the auction.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone practical, reliable, and mechanically sharp. The ideal candidate has strong diagnostic ability and good judgment. You do not need to rebuild every vehicle that comes through the door, but you do need to be able to quickly understand what is going on and communicate it clearly.
Preference will be given to candidates holding a New Brunswick Certificate of Qualification in Automotive Service Technician / Motor Vehicle Repair. Red Seal endorsement, MVI inspection experience, or Truck and Transport experience would be considered strong assets.
Experience: Strong automotive diagnostic experience and experience inspecting used vehicles. Licensed mechanic preferred, but strong inspection and diagnostic experience will be considered. Experience with MVIs, dealership trade-ins, fleet vehicles, or commercial units is a major asset.
Skills: Ability to assess vehicles quickly and accurately. Good understanding of mechanical, electrical, safety, and drivability concerns. Experience with scan tools and basic diagnostic equipment.
Judgment: Strong sense of what matters now, what can wait, and what needs disclosure.
Communication: Clear communication skills and the ability to work around a high volume of different vehicles.
Tools: Candidates should have their own basic hand tools. TGNA provides shop equipment, diagnostic tools, specialty tools, inspection systems, and shop supplies required for the role. Tool allowance or support may be available for the right candidate.
Requirements: Valid driver’s licence.
Why This Job Is Different
At TGNA, your judgment matters. This role is about more than turning wrenches — it is about helping buyers and sellers make informed decisions.
Before the auction, your inspection helps a seller understand value. After the sale, your inspection helps a buyer understand their purchase.
Some vehicles need repair, some need disclosure, and some need to move exactly as they are. Your role is to help make those calls clearly, fairly, and confidently.
- No flat-rate guessing game.
- No retail service-counter grind.
- No selling unnecessary work.
Just practical inspection, diagnosis, and mechanical decision-making in a fast-moving auction environment.
Compensation & Schedule
Pay: $32–$38 per hour, depending on experience.
For the right person with strong diagnostic ability, inspection experience, licensing, or leadership potential, we are prepared to discuss a stronger package.
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Wednesdays are Auction Day, from 8:30 AM to auction end, typically around 8:00 PM.
Benefits: Comprehensive benefits available, including Health, Dental, and Vision.
