Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Programmer / Set-Up Operator to join our manufacturing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and maintaining Mazak CNC lathes utilizing Mazatrol controls. This role requires a skilled machinist with a minimum of 5 years of CNC lathe programming and set-up experience who can work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of quality, productivity, and safety.
Responsibilities:
CNC Programming & Machine Set-Up
- Set up and operate Mazak CNC Lathe Centers equipped with Mazatrol controls.
- Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs as required for production.
- Select and install tooling, fixtures, and work-holding devices.
- Perform machine set-ups and prepare equipment for production runs.
- Prove out first-off parts and make any necessary program or tooling adjustments.
Quality Control
- Inspect and verify first-piece production to ensure compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
- Check parts for dimensional accuracy, tolerances, surface finish requirements, and completion of all machining operations.
- Perform random in-process inspections throughout production runs.
- Use precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, and other inspection equipment.
- Report quality concerns and take corrective action as required.
Production Responsibilities
- Ensure machines are running efficiently and meeting production requirements.
- Monitor machine performance and report maintenance or service issues to the supervisor.
- Ensure all required secondary operations are completed.
- Move completed parts to the deburring area upon completion of machining operations.
- Notify the Production Coordinator of material shortages or production-related concerns.
Tooling & Housekeeping
- Return all jigs, fixtures, and special tooling to the Tool Room Coordinator after completion of production runs.
- Return all clamps, fasteners, parallels, springs, and related tooling to their designated locations.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in accordance with company standards and housekeeping practices.
- Ensure proper care and storage of company tools, equipment, and measuring devices.
Health & Safety
- Follow all company health and safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Report all safety concerns, hazards, incidents, and near misses immediately to:
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Participate in safety initiatives and contribute to maintaining a safe workplace.
Additional Duties
- Assist with continuous improvement initiatives as required.
- Support shop floor operational requirements to meet customer delivery schedules.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Machine Shop Supervisor or President.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a CNC Lathe Programmer / Set-Up Operator.
- Extensive experience with Mazak CNC lathes and Mazatrol controls.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong understanding of machining practices, tooling selection, feeds and speeds, and production processes.
- Technical degree, diploma, or certificate in CNC Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field; and/or
- Equivalent combination of education and demonstrated machining experience.
Technical Skills
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, process sheets, and GD&T.
- Proficiency in precision measuring and inspection techniques.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of production machining and lean manufacturing practices is considered an asset.

Working Conditions
