We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design and develop mechanical systems for robotic automation, machine vision inspection equipment, fixtures, motion systems, and industrial production applications.
Position Overview
The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, prototyping, fabrication coordination, assembly, installation, and validation of automated inspection and robotic systems.
The engineer will work closely with software, controls, electrical, AI/VLM, robotics, and manufacturing teams to transform system requirements into reliable, manufacturable, and serviceable mechanical designs.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience designing industrial machinery, automation equipment, robotic cells, precision fixtures, frames, conveyors, gantry systems, and machine-vision-related mechanical components.
Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical System Design
- Design mechanical systems for industrial automation, robotic workcells, and machine vision inspection equipment.
- Develop machine frames, structural assemblies, enclosures, gantries, fixtures, jigs, mounting systems, guarding, and operator stations.
- Design mechanical interfaces for industrial robots, robotic arms, grippers, end-effectors, cameras, lighting systems, laser profilers, sensors, and edge computing equipment.
- Develop conveyor, belt, servo-driven, linear-motion, rotary, and product-handling mechanisms.
- Design product positioning, alignment, orientation, loading, unloading, and transfer mechanisms.
- Develop mechanical solutions supporting high-speed manufacturing and inspection cycles.
Robotics & Vision Integration
- Design robot mounting structures, bases, pedestals, tooling plates, and end-of-arm tooling.
- Develop fixtures and positioning systems that ensure repeatable product placement for robotic and vision applications.
- Design camera, lighting, laser scanner, and sensor mounting structures with appropriate adjustability and rigidity.
- Support integration of 2D cameras, 3D cameras, laser profilers, proximity sensors, encoders, and other industrial sensing equipment.
- Address mechanical tolerance, vibration, field-of-view, accessibility, calibration, and repeatability requirements for machine vision systems.
CAD & Engineering Documentation
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and installation drawings.
- Produce complete mechanical Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Define materials, tolerances, surface finishes, fasteners, bearings, linear guides, motors, actuators, and commercially available mechanical components.
- Maintain engineering drawings, revisions, design records, and configuration documentation.
- Apply GD&T where appropriate.
- Prepare fabrication packages for machining, sheet metal, welding, extrusion, and additive manufacturing.
Engineering Analysis
- Perform tolerance stack-up and dimensional analysis.
- Evaluate structural integrity, stiffness, vibration, loading, and mechanical stability.
- Conduct basic engineering calculations related to forces, torque, payload, acceleration, motor sizing, and mechanical safety.
- Perform or coordinate FEA and other mechanical simulations when required.
- Evaluate cycle-time requirements and optimize mechanical designs for production throughput.
Prototype, Assembly & Testing
- Support rapid prototyping and proof-of-concept system development.
- Work directly with fabrication vendors, machine shops, and suppliers.
- Participate in mechanical assembly, debugging, testing, and system commissioning.
- Identify mechanical issues during testing and develop corrective design changes.
- Conduct Design Verification and support Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing.
- Support installation and commissioning of equipment at customer facilities.
Manufacturing & Supplier Coordination
- Select cost-effective commercially available mechanical components.
- Request and evaluate supplier quotations.
- Work with machining, sheet-metal, welding, fabrication, and assembly suppliers.
- Review vendor drawings and manufactured components for compliance with engineering requirements.
- Implement Design for Manufacturing and Assembly principles.
- Optimize designs for cost, lead time, maintainability, repeatability, and scalability.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Professional experience in mechanical design, automation equipment, machinery, robotics, or industrial systems.
- Strong proficiency with professional 3D CAD software such as:
- SolidWorks
- Autodesk Inventor
- CATIA
- Siemens NX
- Creo
- Fusion 360
- Strong understanding of mechanical drawings, tolerances, GD&T, manufacturing processes, and material selection.
- Experience designing machined parts, sheet-metal components, structural frames, and mechanical assemblies.
- Understanding of motors, bearings, linear guides, ball screws, belts, pulleys, couplings, actuators, and pneumatic components.
- Ability to develop detailed manufacturing drawings and BOMs.
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving capability.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-moving engineering environment.
