POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Director, Fund Investments, the Investment Analyst will join the BDC Fund Investments team as an early-career professional and will help evaluate and invest in potential deals and assist with the monitoring our portfolio. In this role you will research and perform analysis for prospective and current fund investments. You are expected to leverage your sharp analytic skills and be able to work alongside experts on a variety of markets and subjects.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Deal Support and Execution
- Evaluate a fund investment’s merits based on trends in the fund’s target markets and verticals, performance of similar funds, and general characteristics such as average deal sizes, total fund size, portfolio companies, years in the market, management fees and amount of reinvested capital
- Manage operational tasks in due diligence such as booking meetings, background research, and minute taking
- Review valuation models and financial pro forma of fund performance, benchmarking various fund-specific metrics (e.g. TVPI, DPI, Fund IRR, RVPI), and portfolio-specific metric (e.g. portfolio history, considering exit dates, exit rationales, value add, MOIC and IRR per company)
- Assist in reference calls with fund managers, and referring sources such as industry experts, and prospect fund’s portfolio companies
- Conduct routine background checks, KYC (Know Your Client) and AML (Anti Money Laundering)
- Assist senior team members in writing investment memos and other matters as required on an ad-hoc basis
Portfolio Management & Support
- Monitor portfolio performance, comparing performance to forecasts and models, and relaying potential opportunities and issues to management
- Participate occasionally in investee fund advisory committee meetings as an observer, keeping abreast of developments and escalating relevant information to senior team members
- Check and review calculations and adequacy of management fees, partner fees, and carry accrued by the investee fund
- Conduct mark-to-market tasks to support the portfolio’s fair value reporting
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Typical Background
- 1 to 3 years of experience in a role involving financial analysis and private investments experience. These profiles are likely to come from, but are not limited to:
- Finance roles: venture capital, private equity, accounting firm
- Advisory roles: consulting, corporate development
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). Other profiles will be considered if the professional has strong analytical skills
- CFA charter or progress towards it would be an asset
- Previous funds investment experience as a limited partner will be valuable
Technical Knowledge
- Good skills in Excel, particularly in building financial models that include sensitivity analysis and scenario modeling, as well as performing data analysis. Knowledge of any other analytic tools, such as Bloomberg, Capital IQ, etc are an asset
- Strong English language writing skills with ability articulate complex logical and financial analysis into written memos
- Fair ability to use other MS-suite applications, mainly Word and PowerPoint
- Technology skills such as Python and/or VBA coding will be an asset
