Nakoda Elementary School is seeking a nurturing, creative, and enthusiastic Kindergarten Teacher who is passionate about early literacy development, play-based learning, and creating joyful early learning experiences for young children.
The successful candidate will create a safe, caring, and engaging classroom environment where children develop foundational literacy, numeracy, language, and social-emotional skills through exploration, inquiry, and meaningful play.
Key Responsibilities
- Create a welcoming Kindergarten classroom that supports curiosity, belonging, and student engagement
- Deliver strong early literacy instruction through play-based, hands-on, and language-rich learning experiences
- Implement literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading, including phonological awareness, oral language development, vocabulary building, and foundational phonics skills
- Design purposeful learning centres that promote exploration, creativity, independence, and collaborative learning
- Support the development of social-emotional skills, self-regulation, and positive peer relationships
- Integrate Stoney language, culture, storytelling, and land-based learning opportunities into daily instruction
- Use observation, assessment, and early learning data to guide instruction and support student growth
- Differentiate learning opportunities to meet diverse developmental and learning needs
- Collaborate with families, support staff, Elders, and school teams to support student success
- Foster a classroom environment focused on kindness, respect, and student well-being
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Education degree
- Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate or eligibility for certification
- Strong understanding of early childhood development and early literacy instruction
- Experience with play-based and inquiry-based learning practices preferred
- Knowledge of foundational literacy development and early intervention strategies
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
- Understanding of Indigenous education and culturally responsive teaching practices is considered an asset
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Experience teaching Kindergarten or early primary grades
- Familiarity with early literacy assessments and interventions
- Ability to create engaging, interactive, and developmentally appropriate learning environments
