In this role, you will be the backbone of our shop’s efficiency, ensuring that raw materials are cut accurately and safely to support our machining, welding, and assembly teams. From reading drawings to maintaining material traceability, you will play a critical role in keeping our production moving smoothly. What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities):
Precision Cutting & Production Support
- Safely operate shop saw equipment according to approved procedures, performing daily checks on coolant, blades, guards, and clamps.
- Cut raw material to required lengths, sizes, and quantities based on travelers, drawings, work orders, and cut lists.
- Verify material types, sizes, heat numbers, and quantities before cutting, and use approved measuring tools to confirm lengths before releasing material.
- Deburr sharp edges and clean cut materials before staging or issuing to the next production step.
Material Handling & Inventory Control
- Maintain strict material traceability by preserving heat numbers, tags, markings, and job identifications.
- Stage cut materials for machining, welding, assembly, or outside processes so colleagues never have to wait for materials.
- Assist with receiving, locating, and moving raw materials using carts, pallet jacks, cranes, or forklifts (where trained and authorized). Keep racks, drops, and remnants meticulously organized and identified.
Safety & Team Collaboration
- Follow all shop safety rules, PPE requirements, and safe lifting practices (up to 50 lbs). Report any unsafe conditions or maintenance concerns immediately.
- Proactively communicate material shortages, schedule conflicts, equipment issues, or unclear instructions with the Machine Shop Manager or Lead Hand.
- Lend a hand with basic shop support tasks and area cleanliness when saw work is complete.
What You Bring (Qualifications & Skills):
- Ability to read and interpret travelers, blueprints/drawings, cut lists, and shop instructions.
- Strong basic math and measuring skills with a keen eye for detail, quality, and accuracy.
- A strong commitment to workplace safety, organizational cleanliness, and reliable attendance.
- Previous experience operating saws, material handling, or working in a manufacturing/mechanical shop environment is a definite asset.
- Prior experience or active authorization for forklift, crane, or overhead lifting operations is highly valued.
