JOB SUMMARY
As the Snowmaking Manager, you are responsible for leading the safe and efficient operation of our mountain snowmaking equipment and supervision of the graveyard shift Snowmaking Team during the winter season and our wildfire program in preparation for the summer season. As a part of Mountain Operations Team, you will inspect and maintain the snowmaking plant machinery and infrastructure, work towards service level objectives and department to ensure an efficient, high-quality snow coverage that supports terrain availability and overall resort operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Develop and execute seasonal snowmaking plans to support terrain opening objectives and operational priorities.
- Monitor weather forecasts, snow conditions, water availability, and production opportunities.
- Direct snowmaking operations to maximize efficiency and snow quality.
- Coordinate snowmaking activities with Mountain Operations, Grooming, Lift Operations, Patrol, and Terrain Park teams.
- Monitor and optimize snowmaking system performance, production rates, and resource utilization.
- Oversee maintenance and repair of all snowmaking infrastructure, including:
- Snow guns
- Pump stations
- Compressors
- Air and water distribution systems
- Hydrants and valves
- Control systems and automation equipment
- Develop preventative maintenance programs and equipment replacement strategies.
- Manage equipment inventories, spare parts, and critical system components.
- Participate in capital planning and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Monitor water consumption and ensure compliance with applicable permits and regulations.
- Maintain records and reporting related to snowmaking operations and water usage.
- Monitor electrical consumption
- Responsible for overseeing the wildfire program, including equipment maintenance and inventory management, staff training, and the implementation of related policies and procedures.
- Coordinate wildfire preparedness activities and ensure operational readiness of equipment and personnel.
- Maintain compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and internal requirements related to wildfire response and mitigation.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position provides direct supervision to a team of 10-15 Snowmakers during the Winter season.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES
Required
- Minimum 5 years of experience in snowmaking operations or a related mountain operations environment.
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory or management experience.
- Strong understanding of snowmaking systems, pumps, compressors, controls, and water distribution infrastructure.
- Experience managing operational budgets and capital projects.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.
Preferred
- Technical certification, trade qualification, or post-secondary education in a related field.
- Experience with snowmaking systems.
- Experience in ski resort operations.
- Project management experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This role operates primarily outdoors in winter conditions and requires working in cold, snowy, and sometimes harsh weather environments; it includes overnight and extended shifts during peak snowmaking periods, with a strong focus on safety, endurance, and adaptability.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$70,000 to $85,000 annually, exact rate based on skills and experience.
