Communications and Organizing Officer
The University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA) is the Association representing all full-time and part-time faculty members and academic librarians at the University of Toronto. It is seeking to fill a full-time Communications and Organizing Officer position in an active Association office located near the University of Toronto downtown campus.
The Communications and Organizing Officer is ultimately responsible to the UTFA President and will work under the day-to-day direction of the UTFA Executive Director or designate.
Location
Our current office is located at 77 Bloor Street West, Suite 1800, Toronto, Ontario. A hybrid work schedule is available subject to operational requirements.
Position Summary
The Communications and Organizing Officer is responsible for assisting UTFA in the planning, development, and implementation of UTFA’s communications plan, including internal and external communications, and in the planning, development, and implementation of strategic campaigns and associated deliverables. The primary role is supporting member engagement through effective communication and Association organizing. In carrying out these responsibilities, the Communications and Organizing Officer will ensure alignment with UTFA’s mission, values, and strategic direction.
The Communications and Organizing Officer facilitates membership engagement with, and participation in, the Association through campaigns and educational initiatives; assists the political leadership with the development of member engagement and other capacity-building strategies; and works with the political leadership and their provincial and national organizations to identify issues, and plan and implement broader-based advocacy campaigns.
The Communications and Organizing Officer supports and works collaboratively with key stakeholders both within and outside of the Association to develop and implement targeted communication and organizing strategies and plays a key role in enhancing the reputation of UTFA through marketing, member engagement, mobilization, and communications initiatives.
Qualifications and Skills
The successful candidate will have a minimum of a graduate degree and five years of experience in a related field and relevant experience in issue organizing, member engagement, campaign organizing or the labour movement and/or social justice movement or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The Communications and Organizing Officer will have:
● A demonstrated commitment to union principles, the labour movement, applicable legislation, and leading practices within the sector;
● A demonstrated understanding of member engagement, capacity building and campaign development tools, strategies and processes;
● A demonstrated capacity to plan and implement effective and successful campaigns, to establish and deliver on short-term and long-term engagement strategies and capacity building goals;
● A general understanding of terms and conditions of faculty employment, collective bargaining processes, and Ontario post-secondary issues;
● The ability to take initiative, be self-directed and creative in developing campaigns and member engagement and capacity building;
● Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, and meeting facilitation skills;
● A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and with tact as part of a team.
● Excellent organizational, problem-solving, time-management and prioritizing skills to manage and prioritize work subject to tight deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment when working alone and as a member of a team;
● The appropriate level of computer and technological literacy, particularly in systems and platforms to advance and track campaign work, mobilization, and member engagement;
● The ability to work on projects individually and in collaboration with other staff members independent of supervision;
● An understanding of AODA and other accessibility considerations for both web and print communications;
● Strong research skills, including the demonstrated ability to search for, find, collect, organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate information;
● A high degree of professional ethics and integrity;
● Significant awareness of the current Canadian political environment; and
● Prior experience with Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace, Salesforce (AdvoLogix), Survey Monkey, Zoom, HTML, social media applications, and web design is an asset.

This position falls within the CUPE 1281 bargaining unit. The salary range for this position is $104,572.64 to $140,698.89. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience; a benefits package is provided. The employee will be provided with access to an excellent defined benefit pension plan with the University Pension Plan.
