Job Overview
We are looking for a hands-on infrastructure leader ready to take ownership of the systems that keep our cloud telecom platform running 24/7. As Director, SysOps, you'll manage our datacenters, network equipment, and bare metal server fleet — while building and leading the team responsible for keeping it all online.
This isn't a role for someone who wants to manage from a distance. You'll be in the weeds on incident response and planned maintenance right alongside your team, while also owning the strategic and people-management side of SysOps: hiring, mentoring, process, and reporting to leadership.
You'll be responsible for the infrastructure supporting our Hosted Voice platform and other cloud services — enclosed routers, PoE switches, bare metal servers, Ubuntu-based operating systems, and custom internal software.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise IT infrastructure across AWS, and Datacenter environments.
- Oversee the management of operating systems including Linux servers to ensure optimal performance and security.
- Manage database systems such as SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and NoSQL databases to support application needs.
- Architect and maintain network services including Firewalls, DNS, VPNs, and computer networking protocols to ensure secure connectivity.
- Implement DevOps practices for continuous integration/deployment pipelines.
- Monitor system health and troubleshoot issues related to operating systems and cloud services.
- Establish security protocols for data protection and access control; manage firewalls, VPNs, and other security measures.
- Collaborate with development teams to support application deployment using JavaScript, Java, T-SQL, PL/SQL, and other programming languages.
- Lead disaster recovery planning and ensure compliance with industry standards for data integrity and security.
- Provide leadership in technology strategy planning aligned with organizational goals; mentor IT staff on best practices.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in system administration or IT leadership roles
- Strong expertise in operating systems
- In-depth understanding of database management systems such as SQL Server (Microsoft SQL), MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle; familiarity with NoSQL databases is a plus.
- Proficiency in computer networking concepts including DNS configuration, VPN setup, TCP/IP protocols.
- Skilled in scripting languages such as Bash (Unix shell), Shell Scripting, Python; experience with DevOps tools like Git and Jenkins is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with REST APIs for integration purposes; knowledge of JavaScript frameworks is advantageous.
- Ability to lead complex projects involving cloud migration or hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on system security and performance optimization.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead teams effectively and articulate technical strategies clearly.
Our ideal candidate will have:
- 5+ years of experience managing datacenter or server infrastructure, with at least 2+ years in a leadership or management capacity
- Deep hands-on experience with enclosed routers, network switches, and bare metal server hardware
- Strong Ubuntu/Linux systems administration experience
- Experience managing or troubleshooting custom software running in production
- Proven incident management experience — you can lead a live outage response, not just review a postmortem afterward
- Experience planning and executing scheduled maintenance windows with minimal service disruption
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical issues for non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to build, mentor, and manage a technical team
- A commitment to continuous improvement of self and company
- Ability to get a police clearance if hired
- 100% in-office role (Chestermere) requiring reliable own transportation
Additional qualifications (bonus consideration):
- AWS experience (EC2, networking, migrations, or hybrid cloud/on-prem environments)
- Experience in a telecom, ISP, or Hosted Voice/VoIP-adjacent infrastructure environment
- Relevant certifications (Linux/LPIC, AWS, CCNA/CCNP, or similar)
- Experience with on-call rotation design and incident escalation frameworks
This role offers an opportunity to shape the technological future of our organization through innovative infrastructure solutions while leading a talented team of IT professionals.
