For more than 80 years, WM. Dyck & Sons has been the building supply business that southeast Manitoba homeowners and contractors actually trust. We're locally owned, family-run, and growing — and we're hiring a hands-on department lead to run sales, purchasing, and merchandising for our electrical and plumbing departments.
This isn't a checkout-and-restock job. You'll own two departments end-to-end: building relationships with regulars, helping weekend warriors find the right part, sizing up jobs for our WD Pro contractors, choosing what we carry, negotiating with vendors, and managing the numbers that come out the other side. If you like the idea of running a small business inside a bigger one, this is that role.
What you'll own
Sales & customer experience
- Be the person customers ask for by name — the one who knows what fits, what works, and what to grab instead when we're out of something
- Serve a mix of retail customers and WD Pro contractors, adjusting your approach for each
- Recommend the complementary items (couplings, wire nuts, the right adapter) that turn a frustrating second trip into a one-stop visit
- Handle complaints quickly and fairly
Purchasing & inventory
- Own inventory levels for electrical and plumbing — what we stock, how much, and when to reorder
- Issue purchase orders to maintain healthy stock without tying up cash in slow movers
- Run regular vendor reviews on price, lead time, service, and quality — and bring in better suppliers when you find them
- Execute cycle counts and keep the data clean
Department performance
- Take ownership of sales and gross profit across both departments
- Make merchandising decisions that drive turns and protect margin
- Supervise restocking and keep the floor looking the way it should
Team & operations
- Backstop the plumbing department first, with sales support elsewhere during peak times
- Cover the cash desk as needed
- Help open and close the store
- Use our POS system fluently (we'll get you up to speed)
- Keep paperwork tight — quotes, refunds, credit memos, transactions
What we're looking for
The essentials:
- Strong customer service instincts — you genuinely enjoy helping people solve problems
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Organized, detail-oriented, and self-directed
- Comfortable lifting up to 75 lbs and being on your feet
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
What would set you apart:
- Trade background in electrical, plumbing, or LBM (lumber and building materials) — in sales, purchasing, or the field
- Retail or wholesale experience, especially in building supply, hardware, or a similar category
- Comfort with Microsoft Office and inventory systems
If you don't tick every box but you're sharp, dependable, and know one of these trades well — apply anyway. We hire on aptitude and attitude more than checklists.
What we offer
- Competitive base salary, scaled to experience and qualifications
- Bonus pay
- Profit sharing — when the business does well, you do too
- Full benefits: extended health, dental, vision
- Store discount across a building supply, hardware, flooring, and design centre that covers most of what you'd want for your own home
- On-site parking
- Casual dress
- A close team where your input on what we carry and how we operate actually moves the needle — and a stable, 80-year-old business behind you
About Niverville
Niverville is one of Manitoba's fastest-growing communities — twenty minutes from Winnipeg's south perimeter, with the cost of living, school district, and quality of life that pulls families out of the city. If you're already here, you know. If you're in Winnipeg's south end, the commute is shorter than crossing town.
