Tuck Shop Coffee Society
Coffee Instructor
Full-time · 348 Pape Avenue, East York, Toronto
This is not an ordinary café job. A Coffee Instructor at Tuck Shop is an all-rounder: part barista, part educator, part craftsperson — and, from your very first week, a student too. You will make and serve excellent coffee, help people learn to love it, and keep learning alongside a team that takes both coffee and teaching seriously. If you are curious by nature and enjoy explaining things almost as much as doing them, you will feel at home here.
What you'll do
Because we are a small, ambitious team, no two days look quite the same. Across a typical week you will:
- Make great coffee. Prepare and serve specialty coffee — espresso, filter, and more — to a consistently high standard
- Look after people. Offer warm, knowledgeable hospitality, and talk with guests about what is in their cup
- Teach and share. Support our SCA courses and enthusiast workshops, and grow into helping lead them
- Work the craft. Assist with roasting, packaging, green-coffee handling, and quality control, including cupping
- Keep things running. Keep the café clean, safe, and well-run, and care for our equipment
- Build the place. Contribute to the life of the shop — our events, our community, and the ideas that keep us improving
What you'll learn
We are a teaching café, and that starts with our own team. This is a place to build real expertise, not just clock hours. You can expect:
- Structured coffee education, including a pathway toward recognised SCA certifications
- Mentorship from an Authorised SCA Trainer and Q-grader & Instructor, and a senior instructor team
- Genuine responsibility, and the chance to grow from supporting our courses to leading them
- A collegiate, intellectually stimulating environment where questions are welcome and ideas are weighed on their merits, not by seniority
Who we're looking for
You do not need years of experience — you need curiosity, care, and a willingness to learn. We are looking for someone with:
- A genuine interest in specialty coffee and in sharing it with others
- Strong communication and people skills, and comfort speaking to groups (or a real willingness to build that)
- Reliability, professionalism, and a collaborative, low-ego attitude
- Availability across our weekly schedule, including weekends, when our courses run
- A Food Handler Certification, or willingness to obtain one
- The physical ability to work on your feet through a shift and lift up to 15 kg (heavier items are handled by two or more persons)
- Legal eligibility to work in Canada
An asset, but not required
- Previous café, barista, hospitality, or teaching experience
- Existing SCA credentials
- Experience with roasting, cupping, latte art, or manual brewing methods
