As Automation Designer II, you will be responsible for designing and delivering building automation solutions that align with client requirements and project objectives. It combines technical system design, product selection, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure cost-effective, high-quality project execution. The position also supports continuous improvement through design reviews, documentation, and team knowledge sharing.
Location - We have three openings that can be based in any of our primary office locations - Calgary AB, Oakville ON, or Ottawa ON. This is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence 1-3 days per week, with ability to travel to project sites as needed.
What will you do?
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Solution Design & Engineering
- Understand requirements and design building automation solutions for various facility types (education, high-rise, office).
- Design building automation network architecture (DDC panels, workstations, integrations like Modbus, BACnet, etc.).
- Prepare design documents (layouts, electrical drawings, sequences of operation, panel layouts, schedules).
- Design building and space pressurization solutions, chiller/boiler plant sequencing, etc.
- Assure designs meet contract requirements (drawings, specs, estimates).
Product Selection & Technical Analysis
- Choose the appropriate mix of products and installation methods for cost-effective solutions.
- Select proper types and sizes of company and third-party products.
- Analyze specifications and drawings for special components and supplier panels.
Project Execution, Cost & Quality Management
- Participate in sales-to-operations turnover meetings to validate estimates and scope.
- Prepare engineering re-estimates and follow up with sales/management.
- Meet the design-allocated budget.
- Perform peer reviews of engineering documents.
- Emit as-built control manuals based on site updates.
Collaboration, Communication & Team Development
- Maintain clear communication with project teams regarding deliverables.
- Open to train members of the engineering team based on current skillsets.
What will you need to succeed?
Education
- Degree or Diploma in Engineering, Electronics, or a related field
Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of building automation design experience. Note, candidates with less experience may be considered.
- Ability to design standard jobs with some deviation using standard tools, products, and practices for small – medium sized projects; large projects with assistance.
Technical Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of industry engineering fundamentals and business operations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, or other engineering design software
- CAD training or equivalent experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Self-starter; analytical and problem-solving skills; learning agility
Other Requirement(s):
- Hybrid work environment with the ability to travel to project sites on an as-needed basis
- A valid and unrestricted G/Class 5 driver’s licence and vehicle is required to participate in the Siemens Fleet Program and for travel to customer sites within assigned region(s).
