Position Overview:
The Customs Release Agent will be responsible for processing import shipments for release through Canada’s customs system, liaising with clients and carriers, verifying documentation, ensuring compliance with customs laws and regulations, and coordinating with government departments. This role plays a crucial part in enabling smooth cross‑border supply chain operations.
Key Responsibilities:
· Review incoming shipments and related documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading/airway bills, certificates of origin, permits) to determine import requirements and release eligibility.
· Enter data into brokerage systems (e.g., EDI, ACROSS, Descartes) and transmit entries to CBSA for release.
· Monitor and manage rejects, follow up on missing or incomplete documentation, contact carriers or clients for information.
· Verify tariff classification, valuation, country of origin, free trade agreement eligibility, duties/taxes, and other regulatory obligations.
· Communicate with clients, carriers, and internal teams regarding shipment status, release issues, and customer service inquiries.
· Maintain accurate records, support audits, ensure internal procedures (SOPs) are followed.
· Keep informed of changes in customs laws/regulations and identify opportunities to improve processes.
· Provide excellent customer service and ensure a professional image in all interactions.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent; post‑secondary education in customs, logistics, supply chain, or related field is an asset.
· Some experience in customs brokerage fields preferred
· Familiarity with Canada’s Customs Act, regulations, and customs brokerage practices.
· Strong data entry skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under deadlines.
· Good interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal); ability to interact with clients, carriers and government authorities.
· Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Outlook) and comfortable learning brokerage software/EDI systems.
· Ability to multi‑task, work under pressure, prioritize effectively.
· CCS certification is an asset
· Knowledge of other government department (OGD) requirements, permits, classification systems like HS/HTS is an asset
