Position Summary
The Communications and Engagement Coordinator supports the delivery of internal and external communications, digital content, stakeholder engagement activities, and public-facing events that advance CoRE's mandate and priorities. Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications and Engagement, the role coordinates communication activities, develops and distributes content, monitors media and digital channels, and supports stakeholder outreach and engagement initiatives. Working collaboratively with staff, partners, vendors, and government stakeholders, the Coordinator helps ensure communication materials and engagement activities are delivered accurately, consistently, and on schedule.
Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Communications Support
Support the implementation of communications strategies for internal and external audiences.
Monitor communication trends, issues, and opportunities and escalates information to the Executive Director of Communications and Engagement for review.
Assist in the preparation of communications material that promote CoRE’s mandate, priorities, research, evaluation findings, partnerships, and impact.
Maintain communication calendars and ensure timely delivery of newsletters, announcements, events, and marketing materials.
Coordinate and track communication activities, campaigns, and projects across the organization.
Collaborate with division leaders to gather information and to develop communication materials.
Coordinate review, approval, and distribution of communication materials.
2. Content, Digital Storytelling, and Brand Stewardship
Draft, edit, proofread, and coordinate plain-language materials including news releases, media notices, briefing notes, speeches, presentations, newsletters, reports, website material, social media content, and other publications.
Plan, produce, and publish high-quality content across digital platforms, including LinkedIn, X/Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, and other approved channels.
Assist in translating research, evaluation, policy, and program information into clear and accessible content for various audiences.
Ensure communications are accurate, audience-appropriate, recovery-oriented, and aligned with CoRE’s tone, visual identity, and established approval processes.
Coordinate design, production, and distribution with vendors, contractors, and suppliers to deliver quality products on time and within budget.
Update and maintain the website and digital communication platforms.
3. Media Relations, Issues Monitoring, and Public Response
Monitor media coverage, social media activity, and public conversations related to CoRE, recovery, mental health, addiction, and relevant policy issues.
Prepare media and social media summaries, identify items for review, and draft response materials for the Executive Director of Communications and Engagement, CEO, Chief Scientific Officer, or other senior leadership members.
Coordinate technical information, approved messaging, and spokesperson materials to support timely responses to media inquiries.
Supports media relations opportunities that highlight CoRE’s research, evaluation findings, partnerships, and system-improvement work.
Maintain media and stakeholder contact databases.
Monitor the Communications inbox, ensuring enquiries are actioned in a timely manner, responses are followed through, and matters are escalated to the Executive Director of Communications and Engagement as appropriate.
4. Engagement, Events, and Stakeholder Experiences
Coordinate site visits, presentations, stakeholder briefings, announcements, and other public-facing engagement activities.
Prepare scripts, speaking notes, briefing materials, visual supports, and logistics plans that create professional and meaningful visitor experiences.
Supports relationship-building activities with stakeholders, partners, service providers, community groups, and people with lived experience.
Ensure established privacy, confidentiality, consent, cultural safety, and security requirements are followed during communications and engagement activities.
Track communications and engagement metrics, summarize trends, and provide information to support improvements to reach, relevance, and impact.
Other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, public policy, health promotion, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Minimum three years of progressive communications experience, preferably in public sector, health, social services, or non-profit environments.
Demonstrated experience in communications planning, writing, editing, social media management, digital storytelling, media relations, and issues management.
Experience coordinating events, briefings, stakeholder meetings, or other public-facing engagement activities.
Strong understanding of recovery-oriented systems of care, the Alberta Recovery Model, mental health, addiction, or related health and social policy issues.
Digital fluency, including experience with social media platforms, analytics tools, content calendars, basic visual content development, and performance reporting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Exceptional writing, editing, storytelling, and plain-language communication skills.
Good judgment and discretion when handling sensitive issues, media inquiries, public commentary, and executive-level materials, with escalation to leadership as appropriate.
Ability to translate complex data, research, clinical, policy, and program information into clear messages for diverse audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally with internal teams and external partners.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, approvals, and stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
Proactive, creative, and solutions focused, with the ability to identify potential stories, issues, and engagement opportunities for review.
Knowledge of communications planning, media relations, digital communications, print production, analytics, brand standards, and Canadian Press style.
Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality, privacy, respectful engagement, and recovery-oriented language.
Sound knowledge and understanding of graphic services and print production techniques and use of social media and websites as communication mediums.
Preferred:
Personal or professional connection to recovery, lived experience, or demonstrated commitment to recovery-oriented work.
Experience working with C-Suite officials.
