Role summary:
We are looking for an experienced and reliable Sous Chef to take a leadership role in our kitchen operations. This position will work closely with management and be responsible for overseeing the kitchen, maintaining food quality, and leading the team. The ideal candidate is hands-on, organized, and confident in managing a kitchen independently.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise kitchen shifts and station readiness.
- Execute menu items to recipe and presentation standards, especially small plates and bar-focused dishes.
- Train and coach kitchen staff; maintain a positive, professional work environment.
- Manage food prep, portion control, and plating during service.
- Assist with menu development, specials, and cost-control initiatives.
- Monitor inventory, receive deliveries, and assist with ordering.
- Maintain kitchen cleanliness, sanitation, and proper food safety/handling procedures (HACCP/food-safe standards).
- Ensure timely communication with front-of-house for service flow and menu changes.
- Help manage scheduling and shift coverage as required.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years as a sous chef or 4+ years progressive line cook experience, preferably in a bar, bistro, or high-volume casual fine-dining environment.
- Strong knowledge of small plates, shareable menus, and cocktail-paired food.
- FoodSafe certification (or equivalent) required; additional culinary certification an asset.
- Proven supervisory and team leadership skills.
- Solid knife skills, timing, and ability to work quickly under pressure.
- Basic knowledge of food costing, inventory control, and ordering.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work nights/weekends.
- Clear communication skills and a positive, service-oriented attitude.
