Located in picturesque Gananoque, the Thousand Islands Boat Museum engages visitors with the special traditions and culture found along the Canadian shores of the St. Lawrence River. From adventures on the river in antique boats to dynamic in-water displays, the TIBM brings the river to life by telling stories through boats. Local marine heritage gets showcased in a whole new way in the recently completed Boathouse, where visitors can experience river life through lively exploration.
Position Summary:
A Museum Maintenance Assistant supports the daily operations, upkeep and presentation of the Thousand Islands Boat Museum facilities and grounds. This role is responsible for assisting with general maintenance tasks, exhibit preparation, seasonal setup, cleaning and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for visitors, staff and volunteers alike. Candidates should be reliable, hands-on, detail-oriented and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic museum setting.
Job Description:
The successful applicant will:
· Carry out maintenance of the in-water fleet of antique boats
· Help, support, and contribute to daily museum operations
· Contribute to woodworking projects working hands-on alongside the Museum Manager
· Launch and repair antique boats
· Complete sales related tasks and retail operations
· Help organize all aspects of events
· Use both hand and power tools to perform and complete assigned tasks
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following skills and qualifications:
· Demonstrate interest and intrigue in Canadian and local history
· Excellent written and oral communication skills
· Experience with and on boats
· WHIMIS and Ontario Pleasure Craft Operator Certifications
· Basic computer skills specifically in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Candidates must:
- be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
- be legally entitled to work in Canada;
- be a minimum of 15 years of age at the start of employment;
- be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week)
