Position Overview
We are seeking a Cross-Border Tax Preparer to join our growing tax office. If you have a solid foundation in individual tax preparation and hands-on experience handling returns for clients who live, work, or hold assets on both sides of the border, this is an ideal fit. You will be responsible for preparing both Canadian and U.S. individual returns, applying the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty, and managing essential international reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare both Canadian personal tax returns (T1) and U.S. individual returns (Form 1040 and Form 1040NR) for cross-border workers and clients.
- Apply working knowledge of the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty to properly coordinate foreign tax credits and prevent double taxation.
- Handle international financial reporting and compliance requirements, including preparing FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) filings for U.S. accounts and Form T1135 (Foreign Income Verification Statement) for Canadian residents.
- Review client documents, organize financial records, and ensure complete data accuracy in tax software.
- Communicate directly with clients to gather necessary information, answer questions, and guide them through multi-jurisdiction compliance.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 2 to 5 years of individual tax preparation experience.
- Cross-Border Expertise: Demonstrated working knowledge and hands-on experience preparing both U.S. and Canadian tax returns.
- Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty provisions and cross-border asset reporting (specifically FBAR and T1135).
- Skills: Strong organizational skills, sharp attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple client files simultaneously.
- Communication: Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills for effective client service.
Pay: $20.00-$40.00 per hour
