Director of House Programs
Organization: Airdrie Minor Basketball Association (AMBA)
Position Type: Casual Contract. Paid monthly from August to May.
Scope: Jr. NBA & Mini House (Co-ed & Girls Got Game)
Reporting to: AMBA Board of Directors
Time Commitment: Average 25 hours per month (Note: Seasonal peaks occur in Sept/Oct and Feb/March and average hours may fluctuate between 10-40 hours)
The Role
AMBA is seeking a high-energy, organized leader to oversee our House Programs (Jr. NBA and Mini House). This role is the heartbeat of our association, responsible for the first experience our youngest athletes have with basketball.
As the Director of House Programs, you are responsible for everything from ordering jerseys to setting the weekly curriculum and schedules. You will serve as the primary mentor for parent-volunteers, ensuring they feel supported on the court while maintaining a fun, inclusive environment for all players.
Core Responsibilities1. Grassroots Leadership & Curriculum
- Program Facilitation: Provide overall coordination and administration for the Jr. NBA and Mini House programs.
- Technical Mentorship Bridge: Act as the bridge for parent-volunteers and the Player/Coach Development Coordinator on-the-court" support ensuring they are being provided the confidence they need to lead practices.
- Curriculum Design: Set the weekly curriculum for Jr. NBA and Mini House to ensure a focus on skill development, retention, and fun.
- Girls Got Game: Maintain the integrity of the girls' program by creating equal teams, ensuring 2–3 girls-only games per season, and working with the Volunteer Coordinator to place female staff.
2. Operations & Logistics
- Equipment & Apparel: Lead the ordering and distribution of Jr. NBA/Mini House packages, jerseys, basketballs, and coach bags.
- Scheduling: Work closely with the Gym Scheduler to create practice schedules and game-day brackets. You are responsible for sending Friday game assignments and time-clock schedules to the scheduler.
- Year-End Tournament: Design and execute the brackets and logistics for the Mini House final tournament.
3. Evaluation & Team Formation
- Evaluation Committee: Serve as a core member of the Evaluation Committee. You are the key contact for player evaluations and team formation for all house levels.
- Integrity of Play: Ensure teams are balanced and fair based on evaluation data to maintain a competitive and enjoyable environment.
- Volunteer Liaison: Partner with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, screen, and place coaches and team-level volunteers.
4. Real-Time Communication & Presence
- WhatsApp Management: Maintain an active and helpful presence in the Jr. NBA and Mini House WhatsApp chats to resolve scheduling or coaching questions.
- Meeting Participation: Attend at least 70% of committee meetings and the AGM to provide program updates.
- Member Support: Act as the primary point of contact for house league parents, ensuring inquiries or issues are addressed within 24 hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basketball Knowledge: A strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and age-appropriate drills for children aged 5–11.
- Mentorship Skills: Ability to encourage and lead parent-volunteers who may have limited basketball experience.
- Organization: High proficiency in managing spreadsheets, ordering bulk inventory, and tournament bracketology.
- Communication: Upbeat, professional, and patient communication style.
- Compliance: Must possess a clean Vulnerable Sector Check and reliable transportation. Possession of NCCP certification Learn 2 Train or higher and Safe Sport Certification are considered an asset. Standard CPR and First Aid considered an asset.
Estimated Timeline of Deliverables
- August - September: Peak Activity. Ordering packages/jerseys, leading evaluations, and forming teams.
- September - November: Season launch, coach bag distribution, and initial "on-the-court" mentorship sessions.
- Nov - February: Weekly curriculum oversight, Friday game assignments, and active WhatsApp support.
- March: Execute the year-end tournament and collect/inventory coach bags and equipment.
May/June: Present final report to the Board and attend the AGM.
