Safety & Environment Manager

This role, based in Dartmouth, is responsible for advancing our safety culture, strengthening regulatory compliance, and driving continuous improvement across our facilities.

This is a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of our safety programs, across all facilities, while ensuring operational excellence and accountability.

Job Responsibilities:

Champion and embed Maritime Paper’s safety culture across all levels of the company,

Provide strategic leadership, direction, and operational support to the safety team,

Identify and lead strategic, operational, and process improvement initiatives that enhance safety performance and effectiveness,

Develop, implement, and continuously enhance safety programs, policies, and procedures to drive operational excellence,

Provide subject matter expertise and mentorship to safety team and leadership on provincial regulatory requirements, ensuring ongoing compliance

Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and timely reporting of safety and incident data

Lead and actively participate in complex incident investigations, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and corrective action implementation

Review and validate investigation findings to ensure quality, consistency, and regulatory alignment

Mitigate hazardous working conditions and at-risk behaviors through proactive safety management and leadership engagement

Conduct comprehensive worksite audits and inspections to assess compliance and performance

Analyze audit results to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities, and provide actionable recommendations

Serve as the primary liaison during regulatory inspections and compliance reviews

Lead or support the preparation of responses and appeals related to safety violation citations

Coach and develop safety team members to build organizational capability.
Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Sciences, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline is required.

A CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professionals) designation would be an asset.

A minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience within a manufacturing environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

Demonstrated experience in leadership roles with responsibilities related to leading and directing safety, operations or risk management within a manufacturing organization, ideally within a unionized environment.

Proven ability to develop and implement long-term strategic plans that meet identified business requirements.

Experience managing multiple facilities.

Must hold a valid driver’s license with the ability to travel throughout the Atlantic provinces.
