Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Safety Officer to provide hands-on, field-focused health and safety leadership across the company’s disposal and transportation operations. The successful candidate will spend the majority of their time on the road, travelling between facilities, yards, and active work locations to conduct hazard assessments, lead incident investigations, maintain the health and safety management system, support COR audits, and train office and field staff. This role carries a dual regulatory mandate, applying Alberta OHS legislation to provincially regulated operations and the Canada Labour Code to federally regulated operations.
Our diverse fleet includes heavy-duty waste collection vehicles (front load, side load, and roll-off garbage trucks), specialized equipment (septic trucks, hook lifts, 4500/5500 trucks), Class 1 tractor-trailers (walking floor and tanker configurations), and light-duty support vehicles.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Field Safety, Hazard Assessment & Incident Investigation
- Conduct on-site inspections and hazard assessments at facilities, yards, and field locations.
- Identify unsafe conditions, implement corrective actions, and confirm close-out.
- Review and maintain FLHAs, JSAs, and safe work procedures.
- Provide a visible field presence, coaching staff on hazard recognition and safe work practices.
- Lead incident, injury, and near-miss investigations using root-cause analysis.
- Complete investigation documentation and regulatory reporting within required timelines (Alberta OHS or Canada Labour Code).
- Support WCB claims and return-to-work coordination with HR.
- Track and report safety metrics (TRIR, LTIR, EMR, near-miss frequency) to leadership.
Safety Management System, Compliance & Audits
- Maintain and improve the Health & Safety Manual, policies, and procedures in line with current legislation.
- Serve as an active JHSC member, supporting meetings, inspections, and action-item follow-up.
- Ensure JHSC and program activities meet legislative requirements for each entity.
- Work with HR to ensure safety records, training matrices, and certifications remain complete and audit-ready; support emergency preparedness.
- Prepare for and assist with COR audits, including internal audits and external auditor coordination.
- Address findings and driver action plans to maintain COR standing under Partnerships in Injury Reduction.
- Support client and prime-contractor safety requirements.
Training, Safety Culture & Continuous Improvement
- Develop and deliver ongoing safety training for office and field staff; develop the onboarding safety orientation, currently delivered by HR.
- Define safety training requirements and, in partnership with HR, flag gaps to keep certifications and competencies current.
- Develop and lead safety initiatives and programs to reduce incidents and improve compliance.
- Monitor provincial and federal legislation changes and update programs accordingly.
- Champion a proactive safety culture and employee engagement.
- Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Safety designation strongly preferred – NCSO, CHSC, or working toward CRST or CRSP.
- Certified COR internal auditor designation (or willing to obtain).
- Current Standard First Aid/CPR certification.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence.
- Minimum 3-5 years of health and safety experience, preferably in waste/environmental, transportation, construction, or industrial operations.
- Demonstrated experience conducting hazard assessments and leading incident investigations.
- Working knowledge of Alberta OHS legislations; familiarity with the Canada Labour Code Part II is a strong asset.
- Experience supporting COR audits and safety management systems.
- Strong hazard-recognition and root-cause analysis skills.
- Confident communicator able to coach and influence at all levels, from field crews to leadership.
- Well organized, with strong documentation and record-keeping discipline.
- Self-directed and comfortable working independently across multiple sites.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and safety management/tracking tools.
