About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver to support a mother living with advanced dementia in Hamilton. She requires supervision for safety and companionship throughout her care visits. While she remains independent with mobility, personal care, meals, and medications, she benefits greatly from engaging activities and a calm presence. The family describes her as one-of-a-kind, and they're looking for someone who can connect with her through simple pleasures like watching YouTube videos or going for walks. This role is primarily focused on providing meaningful companionship and respite support for her husband, who is the primary caregiver.
Responsibilities:
- Provide attentive supervision to ensure the client's safety at all times
- Engage in companionship activities such as watching television, YouTube videos, or listening to music
- Accompany the client on walks when weather and conditions permit
- Offer light assistance with tasks as needed throughout the visit
- Maintain a calm, patient, and positive presence that helps the client feel comfortable and secure
- Communicate clearly with family members about each visit and any observations
- Provide consistent, reliable care that allows the primary caregiver to take necessary breaks
What We're Looking For:
- Fluent Vietnamese speaker who can communicate effectively with the client
- Experience supporting individuals with memory changes or dementia
- Calm and patient demeanor, especially when providing redirection or memory prompts
- Ability to create a comfortable, trusting environment
- Strong communication skills with family members
- Reliable and consistent in attendance and care delivery
- Brings positive energy and genuine warmth to each interaction
- Respects the client's independence while providing appropriate supervision
- Takes initiative when needed and adapts to the client's daily needs
- Understanding that this is the family's first experience with professional care support
Schedule:
This position starts with one visit per week, approximately 4 hours per visit. The family is open to increasing hours once a strong relationship is established between the caregiver and client. Flexibility in scheduling is appreciated as the family coordinates care from Toronto. The ideal start timeframe is within the next few weeks, allowing time for proper introductions and transition.
Family Environment:
The client lives in Hamilton with her husband, who has been her devoted primary caregiver. Their daughter, a college nurse based in Toronto, is actively involved in coordinating care from a distance. The family is navigating this care journey for the first time and values open communication, reliability, and a caregiver who can help their mother feel at ease. They recently transitioned from a day program and are seeking more personalized, one-on-one support. The father may need extra reassurance during initial visits as he adjusts to having outside help, so patience and understanding during this transition period are essential.
