The Mechanical Discipline Lead acts as a subject matter expert on major and specific projects across Canada. Their involvement spans both development phases (Pre-Construction and Tendering) and execution phases.
During the Pre-Construction phase, the Discipline Lead contributes to the design strategy related to the mechanical discipline within the design or bid management team. They actively participate in concept development with the consultant and the specialized subcontractor (if selected), and help strengthen the synergy between design and construction teams by collaborating with or leading the team to ensure that the design and its costs are optimized according to client requirements and remain compliant. Among other responsibilities, this role:
- Collaborates with or leads the design development strategy related to the discipline, within the design management team led by the Design Manager;
- Is typically assigned to review drawings and specifications based on the expected level of detail and client requirements;
- Maintains close ties with the estimating team regarding mechanical discipline work to ensure the specialized subcontractor’s pricing is valid.
After contract award, the Discipline Lead continues to be involved as needed, based on an agreed scope of work, until the design is fully completed, ensuring that guidelines and concepts are respected and implemented. The scope of work may include:
- Reviewing drawings and specifications based on the expected level of detail and client requirements;
- Reviewing tenders for specialized mechanical subcontractors (HVAC, Fire Protection, Plumbing, Controls, etc.) and analyzing received bids;
- Providing support for factory and site testing as well as equipment commissioning.
Additionally, during the execution phase, the Discipline Lead’s technical input may be required from time to time on various types of projects—whether in design or construction—to help resolve constructability issues or deficiencies that may arise on projects involving Pomerleau.
