Position Summary:
he Welding Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and maintaining welding processes across Guelph Manufacturing Group assembly operations to ensure all welded assemblies meet customer specifications and quality standards. The role serves as the primary technical welding authority within the organization, supporting cross-functional teams in Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop, review, and release WPDS (Weld Parameters Data Sheet), Weld Maps, Work instructions. Ensure welding quality meets Customer specifications and Engineering prints.
2. Define and optimize weld parameters for GMAW (MIG), resistance welding, and robotic welding processes.
3. Provide technical support for all welding equipment including robotic GMAW and resistance welding systems.
4. Supervise and manage the setup, programming, and optimization of robotic welding cells.
5. Evaluate and recommend new welding technologies, tooling, and equipment to improve throughput and reduce costs.
6. Recommend design changes to improve quality, reliability, and productivity of welding operations.
7. Conduct applied research and development to investigate, evaluate, and implement new or improved welding processes and prepare technical reports and Support SR&ED Activities.
8. Lead Customers’ complaints on weld-related quality concerns and perform Root Cause Analysis and implement countermeasures for weld failures and non-conformances. Ensure lessons learned are documented and shared across similar processes and facilities.
9. Monitor and Evaluate weld destruct data, macrographs (Cut & Etch), and metallurgical test results to identify process improvements and corrective actions.
10. Analyze Welding process-related downtime data and welding metrics (C/E data) to identify trends and implement proactive solutions.
11. Create and support Preventative Maintenance (PM/TPM) systems to improve welding equipment reliability.
12. Conduct regular audits on welding equipment to ensure operational integrity and safety compliance.
13. Drive Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives focused on weld quality, cycle time reduction, and cost optimization.
14. Participate in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), design reviews, and feasibility analysis for new programs and tooling.
15. Develop and implement Welding-related training and certification programs for welding operators, technicians, and supervisors in robotic welding operations.
16. Conduct technical review meetings with Engineering, Quality Assurance, Production, and Maintenance departments.
17. Collaborate with Supply Chain to manage welding consumables inventory and qualified Supplier sourcing.
Will comply with Health, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
- A three-year advanced diploma or degree in Welding Engineering Technology (or equivalent specialized program).
- 3 to 5 years in Automotive Welding Engineering; Robotic Welding and Welding Metallurgy experience as assets.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (incl. Word, Excel, Teams, PPT, & Outlook).
- Proven experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Lean Manufacturing Principles.
- Solid GMAW and Resistance welding knowledge.
- Ability to diagnose cut and etch results.
- Ability to diagnose weld destruct results.
- Work Experience with ABB / KUKA robotics
- Work Experience with WTC / FRONIUS Welding controller
- Ability to troubleshoot production issues.
- Knowledge of quality control standards.
