The McMichael Canadian Art Collection ranks among Canada’s top public galleries in size and significance. The gallery, exhibition, and programming space comprise 25,000 sq.ft., and are surrounded by a network of outdoor trails, outdoor sculpture garden and 100 acres of conservation land with breathtaking views of the Humber Valley. Over 6,500 distinctively Canadian works of art comprise the permanent collection, and the gallery welcomes on average more than 110,000 visitors annually.
The gallery is currently recruiting for an On-call Preparator, Decantation in its Technical Services department to support the preparation for a large construction / renovation project. The McMichael’s permanent collection of artworks will be moved to an off-site facility. Under supervision of the Manager, Technical Services, preparators participate in the safe movement of artworks into, out of and within the gallery spaces as well as packing artworks. As part of the Technical Services team, you will be supporting the decantation team for a smooth and timely completion of the project. Hours will vary from 0-21 hours per week. On-call staff must be reliably available to work during contracted times, which occasionally include weekends and evenings.
The incumbent must have minimum 3 years of art handling experience, ideally in a museum-standard environment. The successful candidate for the position of On-call Preparator, Decantation will have a positive, team-oriented attitude, very strong attention to detail, and takes pride in work well done. Experience working with artworks in a public environment, as well as knowledge of museum-standard practices and/or carpentry skills, are assets.
A clear Vulnerable Person Background Screening check is required. WHIMS, Emergency First Aid and/or Health & Safety training are assets.
Compensation package: Range is $20-$25.00/hour, commensurate with experience, and includes reciprocal attractions access, defined benefit pension option.
