Plant Health Field Research Assistant
Location: Winnipeg, MB
Duration: 6 months
Schedule: M-F, 7-4. Ability to work overtime during week and weekends when required
Salary range: c$24 - c$30/hr. (depending on experience)
Responsibilities
- Work closely with canola pathologist and laboratory associates to support canola pathology laboratory operations, including fungal culture media preparation, pathogen culturing, and purification of plant pathogens.
- Conduct controlled-environment disease resistance evaluations under the supervision of canola pathologist and laboratory associates, including clubroot, blackleg, fusarium wilt, and verticillium stripe testing to support trait discovery, pipeline characterization, and development of new disease screening projects.
- Support disease screening projects for camelina, Brassica vegetable crops, and other projects, including seed treatment disease screening projects and special research projects that support short-term and long-term breeding and commercial needs.
- Produce inoculum for canola and soybean field trials, as well as controlled-environment disease screening programs for canola, Brassica vegetable crops, camelina, and other emerging disease screening projects.
- Support plant health field trials data collection and other related field activities.
- Collaborate with breeding operations team and other teams to drive operational excellence in controlled-environment operations, support continuous improvement initiatives, and ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality disease screening data.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with established protocols and quality standards.
- Comply with client’s safety standards and actively participate in required safety training and programs.
- Comply with client’s Quality Management System (QMS) and compliance requirements and participate in required QMS-related programs and activities.

Desired Skills/Experience
- Required education: Degree or diploma in plant pathology, agronomy, agricultural science or related field or equivalent experience
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Familiarity with plant breeding and field research methodologies
Additional Requirements
- 40 hours per week
- Ability to work overtime during week and weekends when required
