Position Summary:
As the only shelter in Winnipeg with a fully operational clinic, we’re here to help animals when they have nowhere else to go. With more than 7,000 animals coming through the clinic each year, you will join a passionate team that changes animals’ lives every day.
How you’ll make a difference as a Senior Veterinarian:
· Reporting to the Director, Clinic Operations, the Senior Veterinarian will help lead a team of veterinarians, RVTS, and dedicated clinic staff to provide life-changing care to animals.
· The Senior Veterinarian will be key in helping to oversee WHS shelter medicine, ensuring the well-being of the animals in our care, and community support programs that help to keep people and their pets together.
· The Senior Veterinarian will be a mentor, helping clinic staff gain experience to enhance animals’ health and contribute to positive community impact.

Purpose
Reporting directly to the Director, Clinic Operations, the Senior Veterinarian will oversee the training/orientation of Associate DVMs, RVTs, and veterinary students while managing clinical services and community programs.
Responsibilities
Leadership:
o Assist in supervision of the veterinary team on day-to-day basis including mentoring, training, clinic flow and client communication.
o Models and exemplifies excellence in veterinary care to WHS patients including medicine, surgery, and dentistry.
o Demonstrated proficiency in independently performing the full range of routine small animal surgeries, including canine and feline spays and neuters, soft tissue surgery, dentistry, and shelter medicine procedures.
o Answer medical questions from other departments and manage questions/concerns from the public while upholding the mission, vision, and values of the Organization.
o Support the Director, Clinic Operations and Clinic Medical Manager in the management and development of clinic programs.
o Be the proxy for when Director, Clinic Operations is not available.
o Help to develop, support and update WHS clinic policies and procedures.
o Provide team members with positive coaching and feedback, building a work environment that reflects the WHS values and culture.
o In collaboration with Director, Clinic Operations and Clinic Medical Manager, coordinate and facilitate performance conversations for veterinarians and RVTs, per established standard.
o Support the Director and Medical Manager with recruitment, interview, and selection of new employees.
o Provide input, participate, and make recommendations on corrective actions, as requested, for performance-related issues.
o Be guided by, and guide with empathy. Ensuring a trauma-informed approach with a harm-reduction lens for true community service.
Operations and Oversight:
o Provide a premiere level of care and services to animals and people in accordance with WHS mission, values, goals, and management philosophies.
o Perform the full range of surgical procedures required to support shelter and community veterinary programs, except where referral or consultation is clinically appropriate.
o Provide comprehensive veterinary medical, surgical, and dental services to WHS patients, including independently performing the full range of routine shelter surgeries (including canine and feline spays and neuters) and other soft tissue procedures within the scope of the organization's services. Maintain proficiency in surgical techniques and participate equitably in the surgical caseload.
o Herd health: Assess population health through data analysis, rounds with leadership team, and address population-level issues through changes to protocols, policies, and/or procedures.
o Conducts and/or directs humane euthanasia procedures when required.
o Liaise with other groups requesting services from the Winnipeg Humane Society.
The following are mandatory qualifications for this role:
Education
o A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree.
o Currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine with the province of Manitoba or suitable eligibility.
Experience
o Excellence in knowledge and experience in small animal surgery, medicine, dentistry, and shelter medicine.
o At least 5 years of surgical experience.
o At least 2 years of management experience.
o Previous experience with managing a budget.
Skills
o Excellent surgical skills, dentistry, and shelter medicine skills.
o Excellent leadership, teaching, and communication skills.
o Excellent typing and good computer skills.
