Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Automation and reliability Specialist to join our dynamic manufacturing team. This role involves working closely with the Engineers, OMC, Maintenance and IT, this position will be responsible for the creation and application of technology to monitor or control the production, quality and delivery of products and services through design, programming, simulation and testing of automated machinery and processes to complete tasks.

As a part of the Engineering team you will be responsible to maintain the safety standards in accordance to CSA, ESA and WHMIS and will be responsible for maintaining the standards of all PSHSRs for New and existing equipment for the respective product line. You must follow company policies pertaining to LOTO procedures and report any deficiencies found plantwide
Responsibilities
- Responsible for design specifications and other detailed documentation of their creations.
- Designing process improvement projects; keeping up-to-date with latest developments in industrial automation technology and using these studies in improving productivity and promoting cost effectiveness; keeping track of engineering changes and updating necessary documents; assisting in setting up, operating and maintaining machines.
- Leading automation related capital projects including but not limited to manpower-reduction, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).
- Responsible for cost savings by in-house execution of the automation related projects, that doesn’t require high level of designing or fabrication by outside contractors/machine builders.
- Help source equipment and tooling to be used in Manufacturing and working closely with the Engineer responsible for the commodity to review PHSR before commencing the operation of the equipment.
- Work with process engineers in all automation/programming related changes on the machine to improve cycle time, rework/scrap reduction and OA improvement.
- Responsible for scheduling and leading trials for new automation projects in Co-ordination with the manufacturing production plans.
- Evaluation, implementation, and monitoring of engineering controls to improve processes.
- Assisting Maintenance and Manufacturing engineers in Troubleshooting major Breakdowns (long downtime events) and implementing engineering Countermeasures to avoid future downtime for similar issues across the plant.
- Will devise, build up, mount and keep an eye on instrumentation and control systems that sense, quantify and run functioning processes.
- Program, adjust and maintain all vision software across the facility while training other support staff on how to properly maintain the system after changes have been completed.
- Train other programmers, electricians and any support staff deemed competent on how to program PLC’s, HMI’s and any smart sensors within the plant (laser sensors, color sensors, area scanners, vision systems etc).
Essential Skills and Experience
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. must be great trouble-shooters and must be up to date with the latest technology.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work with minimal Supervision.
- Experience in dealing with contractors and compliance with government plant and/or equipment regulations.
- Dedication and discipline towards work.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent working knowledge of PLC’s, HMI’s, vision systems, robotic applications as well as Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Excel.
- Devise specification and in-depth documentation for their designs.
- Experience in online troubleshooting, reading ladder logic, interlocks and sequencing, safety interlocks, robot recoveries, vision integration.
- Troubleshooting Under Production Pressure, ability to work with maintenance, quality, and production simultaneously. Understanding whether issue is electrical, mechanical, sensor related, pneumatic, software, or process related.
- Strong understanding of VFDs, servo systems, relays/contactors, safety circuits, Ethernet/IP etc.
Beneficial Skills and Experience
- Tier 1 automotive or OEM experience preferred.
- Experience sourcing automation equipment, robotics, PLCs, and industrial controls/tools.
- Certifications in automation (PLC/robotics/safety systems) and Lean Six Sigma (ASQ) are assets.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree /College diploma/Certificate in a electrical field or related discipline is required. PMP certification also considered an asset
Travel Required
- 10% (should be eligible to travel to USA and Overseas)
