Family Law Lawyer – Contract Fee-Split Arrangement
AB Law is seeking an experienced family law lawyer to join our Calgary office under a contract arrangement .
AB Law will provide office space, client intake and administrative support, billing and trust accounting services, and basic office supplies. The successful candidate will receive family law matters generated by AB Law and may also bring an existing client base or develop their own clients.
Compensation
The successful candidate’s professional corporation will be compensated through a fee-split arrangement based on legal fees actually collected by AB Law.
The calculation will exclude GST, disbursements, refunds, write-offs, uncollected accounts, and any other amounts that do not constitute collected legal fees. The specific fee split will be discussed with qualified candidates and documented in a written agreement.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will independently manage family law matters from intake through resolution, including:
- taking carriage of client files;
- preparing pleadings, court applications, agreements, and settlement materials;
- attending court and settlement proceedings;
- communicating with clients, opposing counsel, and self-represented parties;
- managing deadlines and maintaining complete file records; and
- advancing matters efficiently and in accordance with professional obligations.
The successful candidate will work with AB Law’s staff on billing, trust accounting, document preparation, and general file administration. They must comply with all applicable Law Society of Alberta requirements and AB Law’s office policies.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should have:
- active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta;
- family law experience and the ability to manage files independently;
- strong drafting, advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills;
- confidence appearing in court;
- sound professional judgment and attention to detail;
- professionalism when dealing with clients, counsel, parties, and court staff; and
- the ability to work on-site at AB Law’s Calgary office.
Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years of family law experience, including experience with contested applications, desk divorces, child and spousal support, parenting matters, family property claims, separation agreements, urgent applications, and settlement negotiations.
Practice Arrangement
This position is intended to operate as an independent contract arrangement through the successful candidate’s professional corporation. AB Law will be responsible for client billing, trust accounting, office administration, and related support. The professional corporation will invoice AB Law for its agreed share of collected legal fees in accordance with the written fee-split agreement.
