Summit Micro School is a small, independent school offering personalized, project-based education from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8. We are a neurodiversity-affirming school, recognizing neurodivergence as a natural and valuable form of human diversity. This understanding shapes how we design curriculum, structure classrooms, and build relationships.
We are seeking a passionate and reflective JK–Grade 1 teacher to lead a small class within our Reggio Emilia-inspired early years program.
Our students represent a wide range of strengths, interests, and neurodivergent profiles. We are looking for an educator who is comfortable working in an inclusive environment and who understands that children's academic, social-emotional, and cognitive development are deeply interconnected.
Our classrooms are inquiry-driven, emergent, and grounded in careful observation of children's thinking. Rather than delivering a prescribed program, our teachers build meaningful learning experiences that grow from children's interests while supporting foundational literacy, numeracy, and executive functioning skills.
Summit Micro School is not a therapeutic program. While many of our students are identified as autistic, have ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, or other learning differences, our role is educational and supportive. We use responsive, relationship-based teaching practices to help students access learning, develop independence, and thrive within a caring school community.
Responsibilities
- Design and facilitate emergent, inquiry-based learning inspired by Reggio Emilia principles.
- Foster children's curiosity through meaningful projects, play, exploration, and documentation.
- Support early literacy, numeracy, and executive functioning through individualized instruction.
- Create classroom environments that promote regulation, belonging, confidence, and engagement.
- Integrate social-emotional learning naturally throughout the school day.
- Observe, document, and reflect on children's learning to inform future programming.
- Facilitate outdoor learning and exploration throughout the year.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and families to support each child's growth.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Education (OCT certification is an asset but not required).
- Current First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to complete prior to starting.
- Understanding of and/or willingness to learn about Reggio Emilia philosophy and emergent curriculum.
- Experience supporting neurodivergent learners in an inclusive educational setting.
- Knowledge of child development, relationship-based teaching, and social-emotional learning.
- Ability to differentiate instruction for a diverse range of learners.
- Strong communication, organization, and reflective practice.
- Collaborative, flexible, and open to ongoing learning and feedback.
Professional Fit
This role is well suited to educators who:
- View neurodivergence through a strengths-based, inclusive lens.
- Enjoy designing curriculum from children's observations, questions, and interests.
- See social-emotional development as fundamental to learning.
- Value close relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Thrive in a small, collaborative school community where flexibility and reflection are essential.
Application Process
Interested candidates are invited to submit a résumé and cover letter describing their teaching philosophy and experience with emergent, inquiry-based, or student-centred learning.
Applications should be sent to [email protected].
Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
Summit Micro School is committed to equitable and inclusive hiring practices. We believe diverse perspectives, identities, and lived experiences strengthen our learning community and encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds and experiences.
